Folks,

I just bought this car (built 6/02 and has 65K miles) and I now notice two things:

1) The rear-view mirror has buttons for auto-darken. When I turn it on, the little red light comes on - turn off and the light goes out. Problem is, on either setting I don't notice any difference in how bright the guy's lights are right behind me at night. Can the darken feature of the mirror be inop when there is obviously power getting to it? Blown fuse or bad mirror? The auto turn-on feature of the headlights works great.

2) There are red lenses on the rear inside of the front door panels. They do not light up when I open the door or turn on the interior lights. Are they supposed to actually light up (and I have either blown bulbs on both sides or a blown fuse?) or just reflect light?

I have looked in the online service manual and I can't tell what fuses might control these two things. Are they related in the electrical circuit?

If you have tinted the back window, the auto-dim feature may not work, I have 25% tint in my back glass and it keeps this feature from working.

The lenses are reflectors only, no lamps in them

Hope this helps

The dimming effect is subtle. I only notice it when really bright lights or semi lights are behind me.

Where can I find the online service manual?

I agree and the red lenses are only reflectors.

Some of us were wondering about this car. Would you care to enlighten us?

How did the individual manage to rack up so many miles in such a short time...

And...if you are willing that is....

What did you finally get it for dollar wise?

Good Question..
Guys,

The car was built in June of 2002 - should really have been a 2002 model... They ran it about 30K a year or so... I traded for it, but factoring my trade value, the cash equivalent was ~$15,800. I was happy with the deal.

The manual is available online if you register with the Mercury pages as an owner - need your VIN to register. Go this link to start:

Thanks for the advice so far!
