View Full Version : BFG tires rear size finally gone?

I know that some hate the BFGs, but for those of us that found them to be a good tire, I noticed the rear size are on closeout at TireRack now. Guess they are finally going away as TireRack was one of the last places I was able to find that carried the BFG rear size for the MM.

That's a really good question.

That was the deal a few years ago when they made the bad run. But I wonder if they are finally going to stop making them.

Hey tbone what's happening and all that.

When I needed rear tires I call BIG and they gave me a number for my tire dealer to call and I got rear tires in 2012. Last year they had a run of the rears and I bought 2 at that price on line
So we will see what goes

I waited 9 months the last time and was the first to get a set that were stamped wrong. I'll probably get a set of Coopers next time. I just wish the fronts would wear out at the same time as the rears. It's always one pair or the other that are worn out and I want a matching set.

I got sick of the games BFG played with our tires and went with Nitto Motivos. I'm satisfied so far. BFG can go sit and spin.

I like the tread pattern. What's the closest they make to the rear size we need? Are they speed rated? I know I can look it up, but you probably know off the top of your head and I'm lazy at the moment.

The last time I bought rear tires from TireRack it didn't say "Closeout". It said out of stock or something and I had to wait a number of months until the next tire run. So me thinks they are going bye bye this time.

You buy a tire for its tread pattern! When your smoking them it doesn't show lol. I had the Coopers on a road course, drag strip and Atlanta speed way, plus over all driving they are great. My opinion!

No, I don't buy a tire only for it's tread pattern. But it is important to me. There are some really fugly tires out there that I would never mount on my car no matter how great they are. I just spent the last half hour researching specs.....

Anyway, it looks like the Coopers don't have a Z rating, so I would go for the Nitto's over them.

W rating is replacing the Z rating...Z rating was up to 149mph.. The Cooper's have a W rating which up to 168 mph

I agree. I like the Nitto 555's in the 265 50 18 size (still deciding on whether or not to try to put the 295's on stock rims). I know the Nitto 555 is not the preferred tire up North.

The Coopers I saw didn't have a W or a Z before the R so I assumed they weren't speed rated.

I can understand not seeing the W or Z in the tire size like we are accustomed to.

Here is a page from a tire shop I found online..they list the service rating after the size and it gives the W rating range in the box next to it.

Nittos are a good choice as well..I like my Coopers..and got em for $600 for all 4 so I went that route..I was looking at Nitto 555..but used the savings to spend elsewhere........Thanks to a couple members here who spread the mod virus:lol:

I believe the Motivos have a W rating and some may have a Y but w/o taking the time to research I'm relying on memory. I think if you look closely at the specs page on the Nitto web page it explains what has what.

I'm going with the Nitto 255/55R18 rears. My rear tires are nearly bald AGAIN and I go nowhere in the snow. The fronts I'll do in the spring as there is plenty of tread left. Goodbye BFG. You screwed people for too long now with availbility of your tires.

No. The sidewall should be near-vertical to work properly. As with many things, there is no cheap or easy way to do it correctly. There is only the right way - widen the wheels.

A few years ago when the BFGs were getting hard to come by my friend that manages a tire store said on the BFGs they make a run 2 or 3 weeks a year DEPENDING on the number of pending orders. So, as less and less people put up with waiting for them to make them, the demand goes down and eventually they will be discontined. There is no set schedule as to when they make a run, as more popular tires get run first, these are done when the line is slow.

By the way, we found the same size BFG on the new Camaro, but when he checked the specs the weight limit was less so he did not reccomend it for my car.

I went with Nittos. They are smoother, quieter and less vibration at triple digit speeds. The new BFGs we put on the front of one of the other MMs went out of round in 18 months and made it sound like a bad front hub bearing. After that, the other front one went out of round 2 months later. I lost confidence in BFG after that.

I will continue to use the Nittos.

Sounds about right. They are torpedoing their own sales, yet somehow I don't think they care.

It is too bad, as I have found them be a good performing option. And we sure need tire options for these cars.

Any experience/opinion with the 255's vs 245's?

I once ran Yokohoma Advan 255/55-18 on the rear. The tires weren't good (apparently "SUV" tires as many 255s are), but the sidewall did not appear terribly distorted.

I definitely would not go more than one size larger in width. Personally, I stick with the 245s as I believe allowing the sidewall to work optimally results in the best handling. But you only have so many choices with these cars.

Plus wider looks cool.

Sure, up to a point and there is always the cool factor. I think tires too wide for the rim don't keep the tread as flat on the track either. You can cheat up to a point with wider tires only, but to really go wider you need wider rims.

And then on the front if you mess with the wheels you have to consider offset and maintaining a scrub radius close to zero.

I figured 10mm wider should be ok with stock wheels and not look stupid or mess up the performance factor.

Many many folks moved into 255's when the 245's were even less available than now. You should have no issues as long as you stick with a similar weight rating as the OEM's, 103 on the rear and 97 on the front. :)

Sorry I'm lost now. Are you talking about the 555's or the Motivos? If the Motivos I haven't noticed a difference over the 103 BFG's as far as weight goes.

In my opinion the Motivos are definitely a step or two up from the KDWS'. I have driven a few members' cars who run the 555's and they handle well but being someone else's car I really never 'tested' the limits.

Damn, on closeout for $192? I never paid that much for one tire. The original tires were great handling, but only if you liked a bald center tread at 15K miles. I've gone to the 255/55 in a Yokohama and I love those. The extra half inch of height takes a bit of the sting out of the 4.10s now that gas is $STUPID/gallon.

This is what I put on the Marauder in a 235/55 front and a 255/55 rear. Handling is probably not 100% of what it would do with the KDWS, but it's very good. Ride and noise are better than the KDWS and the price was very good at Discount. They look great on the car too.

I got OEM back tires from tire rack "Close out" last week. Their website still lists them. I like the tires, but do not get many miles out of them. Running 32psi rather than the 35 recommended did give lesswear in center. 21,000 and still thin tread left in center. Most stores in my area do not carry the size for our rear tires.

Good luck finding them. Plan ahead if possible.

I remember when I would buy them at America Tire and Costco. Only place I see now is Tire Rack. Funny, when I first posted this thread, rear tires were closeout at $184 a tire. Now they are like $192.

Well, lol, after finally getting through my last hoarded supply of BFGs, finally moving on to another brand of tire. Trying General Tire since they are made in USA. The BFGs were starting to have small cracks as they were getting near the end of their life. I'm sure I was the last or one of the last, lol.

The last set of BFG's I bought last year were made in Indonesia from a US design. They are NOT the same quality as the US made BFG's. I switched to Continental's. Similar tread pattern if that matters, smooth sidewall like the original BFG's, better treadwear than BFG's, quiet, speed rating options. Shopping around they were less than $200 each in November.

I've been on Coopers since 2015, but this time around I just didn't want to spend $209 EACH for new rears, so I went with Falkens this time around for $45 cheaper per tire. It's been about a month and so far no issues.
