Any ideas on the cause and what the fix is?
Check engine light came on too. Not sure if it's related. Haven't had time to get it looked at. It's currently stranded in the driveway because of snow.

Likely the float in the tank got hung up.

Those floats are so darn iffy...i can drive 80-90 miles for the 1st 1/4 tank in my Marauder and then the level drops pretty fast
In my 03 MGM I get about 30 miles to the 1st 1/4 tank the the level drop very slow

TRY KICKING IT...

My Grand Marquis' fuel gauge works differently than my Marauder as well. Will start to move about 70 miles into a tank towards the 3/4 range.

I had problems with mine, was throwing a P0460 code. I replaced the sending unit with the one off my old fuel hat and it cleared my problem up.

I had that problem with my Vic when I bought it. Turns out the float and arm had popped most of the way out of the little box. New (read:junkyard) sending unit and all was well.

Before you get a wrench out try this....

I **** you not it worked for me otherwise I wouldn't say to do it.

Our 01' Cobra gauge got stuck on full. I was told to go get a bottle of Techron, the black one and dump it in the tank. I figured 8$ to save me from pulling the tank? It was worth a shot.

I can't tell you why. But it F'n worked!!! I had another mustang buddy with the same issue pop up. I recommended it and it worked for him too.

Snake oil? who knows. Coincidence? Could be.. But for a few bucks and injectors could use a good cleaning anyway...

Snake oil?? Maybe...

But it WORKED!! I put 2 bottles of 12 gal treatment, then filled the tank. Gauge is now working! The FLAPs had it on sale, buy one bottle get one free.
Hope it doesn't happen again.
Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for posting, that's a good tip.

FYI, that trick will only work with Techron or Gumout's Regane.

The issue is sulphur contamination on the sliding contact for the sender. Both Techron and Regane contain PEA (polyetheramine), which cleans the contacts. I believe they are the only two treatments that are PEA-based.

+1!

I've used Regane for years because....... it works!

BTW: My Marauder's fuel gauge seems to be stuck on 'EMPTY' all the time....:D
