how much horsepower our stock trans cans take

I've seen reports of issues above the 450hp mark like broken output shafts, etc., and actual clutch slippage issues above 550hp.

I was told by a Ford Tech it could hold 500 pretty good but above 525 would start wearing it out quicker.


When I started making 550 RWHP with mine it lasted about a year. It had 64k at the time I started making that hp and I had it redone at 70k. The first thing I noticed was the torque converter starting to flare at WOT. Before anything had a chance to go BOOM I went ahead and had it rebuilt.

High rpms is what kills them more than anything. Snap ring flies right off and everything starts getting munched.
