View Full Version : Oil additives

My second marauder had rolled 175k miles. It's only used Royal purple or Mobil 1 motor oil.
Being that the miles are climbing is there any additive I should use?
Car runs great. Burns a tiny bit of oil between oil changes but it's expected. I beat the piss out of it.
With the recently cold temps in the AM the car makes a funny scraping like sound when I fire it up after sitting all night. I'm pretty sure it's from the oil draining to the pan then having to re oil the upper part of the motor. It doesn't do it rest of the day even if I don't drive it for hours.

If you race it, add some ZDDP, or, just change oil and filter frequently.

Mine was doing it in the cold temperature too, its probably the oil draining back and since the temps are so low, the oil is really thickening up from sitting all night. Im going to run 5w20 next, not 5w30.

Do you run 5W-20 with the 820S filter?

I do a little spirit driving here and there with some giggle gas in it.

Yea I figured it was dry from draining back

Yes and yes. Always have

Get an oil analysis done. That will tell you the condition of the inside of the motor. Unless there is something wrong inside I'd continue to run whatever oil you are running now. High quality oil will have all the additives needed.

I'll look into it. I change the oil frequently being that I drive it everywhere. I never go over 3k miles without a oil change and I actually have 176128 on her

You might be wasting your money on 3k oil changes. The last analysis I had done said I could go 6.5k between changes. I do the O&F change every 5k.... easier to remember.
Google Blackstone Labs for the analysis.

Use an oil that clings to the parts and doesn't just run off if sitting. Helps prevent a dry start condition

Mary's car is over 180,000 and has never had an additive. Burns less than a quart in 5,000.

Bradd Pen oil sticks to the stuff. The full synthetic stuff is nice but tends to run off of the parts quicker

I'm sure there's other oils that have a better tendency to "stick" to the parts too though not just BP

The way to test it is take a part from an engine nice and smooth. Dunk it in the oil of choice. Leave on somewhere it won't be disturbed for a while. Come back to it and see how much is left coating the part

Oil drains back from your timing chain tensioners causing a clatter on startup and I don't think oil choice has much to do with it unless you use 50 weight or STP??:shake:
To build pressure in the tensioners before cranking you could install this system!!

Well I found out my motor ISNT burning oil. There is a plug or some sort under the oil filter that's attached to the oil pressure sensor or sender unit that faces the ground and it's leaking. I pulled it out and pit some red sealant on it and it's still leaking. Maybe I need to use some black or grey stuff

I'd use teflon tape to seal the plug. Are you sure it's coming from the plug? Usually the oil filter mount gasket leaks.

The filter adapter gasket is a fairly common failure point for leakage...spray the whole area off with Brakleen and that should help pinpoint it.
*EDIT*...looks like Jim beat me to it... :D

I can identify with that Jim!!;)
It's probably the adapter gasket......mine leaked oil and it's a common problem and not at all hard to replace!!:shake:
Good Luck!!

Did anybody mention the gasket:). Mine was also leaking oil, i tried tightening the plug, and thats not it. Replaced the gasket and so far, so good! It seemed to only leak under pressure...what pressure? I do not know because the phoney department at ford worked on that part of the car....jerks.

"Did anybody mention the gasket"
See posts #20, 21 & 23.
"what pressure?"
The oil pump puts out over 120 PSI when cold and 25+ PSI when the engine is at operating temperature.

I've done the brake cleaner test it's the plug

While I'm doing the plug I'll go ahead and replace that gasket as well just have it done
