A good friem
A good friend of mine has a new F-150 with the turbocharged 6 . He wonders if anyone can suggest an exaust system that would give him more power without a lot of noise. He's thinking cat-back but will consider other mods. I would appreciate any advice you may have, Thanks Maury

Have him scope out YouTube videos. Bet most available systems are on there and he can listen for himself for what he likes.

Tell him to get straight pipes and a good set of ear plugs

I had a Borla cat back on my 99 F150. Sounded good.

Maury StainlessWorks makes several options and they sound great.
If your friend is interested, I can get him the best pricing on their products.

I have a 2013 F150 Ecoboost. Personally I would never consider changing the exhaust. 6 cylinder motor just do not sound good. All I have ever heard is a crappy sounding exhaust that adds more drone.
My question would be, are there any exhaust components such as down pipes that could give him the performance boost that he is looking for without changing the factory exhaust tone? What about just an intake and a tune? I am waiting on the S&B intake to be released, but like I said earlier it will be keeping the factory exhaust.

The F-150's exhaust systems (EcoBoost or 5.0L) are not that restrictive.
Both the resonator front pipe and muffler are straight-thru ...

http://www.gdmjoe.com/gothf150/exhaust/2009muffler.jpgAnd as far as power gains ... It would take a tune to eek-out anything.
Word of caution on tunes ... FoMoCo is clamping-down of flashed PCMs ESPECIALLY when there's engine failure.
How can they tell? The PCM calibration filename located in the IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) vehicle log file. The filename (Identified in IDS as PCM_FILENAME) must begin with the prefix letter "D" to be a valid FoMoCo production level calibration.
As of todate, after-market has not found a way to bypass the situation. Even if you detune back to stock, that log file will show it was there at some point in time and void your warranty for anything powertrain related.
TSB 11-7-7 - AFTERMARKET POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE CALIBRATION—NON-FACTORY MODIFICATION OR AFTERMARKET COMPONENTS (http://www.gdmjoe.com/gothf150/documents/2011tsb11-07-07AftermarketWarrantyVoids.pdf ) ««« -click-Besides ... You may want to tell your "good friend" to hold-off for a why so that FoMoCo can address fuel delivery, intercooler, stalling, etc. issues that are still plaguing the F-150's EcoBoost.

Regarding intake (assuming you're referencing (say) a CAI) ...
Install it for the added growl and/or engine bay cosmetics. Do it for ANY other reason (e.g. performance | MPG gains) and you're will be disappointed and have wasted your $$$$$.
.
Most (if not ALL) of any performance gain(s) on a CAI+tune install is from the tune. *Anyone that tells you different sells CAIs. *Even 5Star Performance admits to that fact and they cater to the F-150 crowd with CAIs+tune.
.
The OEM, stock CAI (airbox and snorkle that inputs from the wheelwell) provides more than adequite air flow CFM. *If you want to improve upon it try this mod' for 1/10th (or less) than the co$t of a CAI - Custom Ram Air system (http://www.f150forum.com/f38/custom-ram-air-system-2011-5-0-a-93833/) ««« -click-
.
A freer flowing filter comes at the expense of less filtration.
