View Full Version : differential cover or girdle with good clearance

I seem to have developed a gear oil leak at the differential. Doesn't appear to be the pinion seal, and the axle was recently rebuilt. It may be I buggered the original cover with the floor jack one of the many times it was jacked up for rear suspension or brake work. I guess if it was a pinion seal leak I would see oil on the seal exterior, but I just see it on the bottom of the housing.
So, If I want to replace the cover (and still clear my ADDCO hollow sway bar at full compression), is one particular girdle cover better than another? I sure don't like the trial and error approach at $200. Unfortunately I think I have a different rear sway bar than most folks here, which has caused me some headaches with exhaust loop interference.
The TA Performance TA_1806B (http://www.taperformance.com/products.asp?cat=52) claims to be low-profile and is supposed to clear the 2005 Mustang panhard bar. Apparently they OEM to Ford Racing. Or there is the LPW girdle (http://www.lpwracing.com/Ultra_FORD/Ultra_FORD.html). Certainly looks low profile.

The gt500 cover will NOT work without modification, ive heard that with the regular addco sway bar one or two of the cooling fins need to be shaved/grinded. Just a heads up. Also ebay seems to have good prices once you find one.

I've got a Ford Racing one with Addco bars, and all works well. Now, i'm not sure if it was modified to fit, and I can't get to the car right now to look. From what I've seen of it in the past, it doesn't look like it.

Mine is made by TA Performance, who are the actual manufacturers of the ones Ford Racing sells (they're identical) and it fits perfectly with the Addco rear sway bar...no modication needed. Same with Mary's car...

I have Trick Flow Girdle - puts 5lbs on the bearing caps. Mag Drain. Clears factory sway.

We run the T/A covers here at Curless Auto, no need to pay extra to have the cover say Ford on it. They fit perfect!

I ended up *not* using aftermarket/Ford Racing covers on mine as (besides the potential Addco issue) they wouldn't work with the rear-crash-protection ring.
Just something to consider, different people different priorites etc. etc.

Big plus +3 ^^^^^
I have this cover on my Rauder. Plus has additional fluid capacity so runs cooler and stays a lit bit cleaner.

I put the T/A cover on when the 4.10 gears were installed. It fits fine with the Sparta kit I installed two years ago.

Have been using a T/A cover for 6-7 years now with Addco rear sway, no fitment issues whats so ever.
TA_1806 is what you want
"Low Profile Ford 8.8" 10 Bolt Rear End Girdle's primary use is for '81 & Up Mustangs. Also fits most Ford Cars and Trucks with 8.8" Ring Gear including Crown Victoria and Marauder. Overall height measures 4" from gasket surface. Will fit 05 and later Mustang if a Panhard Relocation bracket is used. Does NOT fit Independent Rear Suspension. Note: TA 1806B is specifically designed as a direct bolt on for 05' and newer Mustangs."
Getting the stud kit is also recommend, it's just cheap insurance.

I'll have to check the overall height on the LPW part. It might be shallower, but I'm not sure. Unfortunately, we don't have the same sway bar so it is hard to know for sure what will work. I'll probably have the car jacked up tonight to look at the oil leak again and will measure the distance from the stock cover to the sway bar.
Edit: Cortex racing (http://www.cortexracing.com/shop/ford-8-8-10-bolt-rear-end-girdle-super-low-profile/) is claiming 3.5" height for the TA_1806B super low profile. Guess I'll have to verify.
I think it is likely I will be looking for the most clearance possible, based on previous experience hitting the sway bar on the stock cover until I shortened the end links to rotate the rear of the bar downwards.

According to LPW their cover is 3" from the gasket mating surface to the highest point (girdle bar). So they may have the most clearance.

I have the Ford Racing cover on my MM ... it is more better than the T/A cover ... I gained about 10 hp over the T/A cover, more better gas mileage, and added 5mph to my top speed!!! ;)

I could tell you the B&M cover will not fit, i'm going to try shorter endlinks this weekend to make it work.

I can't speak for the hollow bar, but I cut an inch or so off the ES sway link threads and the spacer, plus added 25MM lateral locks and it now clears my Ford Racing cover and stays perfectly centered.
Also keep in mind I have the two bolt ES sway bushings and added a 3/16" or so plate steel for the new bushing mounts plus my car is really lowered. Those two things will also effect the bar and how it sits.
