My 2004 MM 62,000 miles will not shift through the gears. Seems to get through first and second and then no further. Fluid checks good. Any suggestions as to what I am looking at to get fixed. Thanks

Broken or twisted stub shaft = fried clutches. At least that was my issue.

Seems to get through first and second and then no further. So it stays in second or it then goes to neutral? If it stays in second, then possibly the DTRS.

Diagnosis by dealer is direct clutches burnt wont go into 3rd or 4th gear. Estimate by dealer to rebuild @$2200 with 1 yr warranty or remanufactured @$2500 with 3 yr warranty. Estimate by local transmission shop @$1500. Car has always surged so transmission probably always slipped, but kept close to the black trilogy.
Had a 94 Grand Marc transmission rebuilt by this shop and wasnt real please with the transition to OD. He told me if I wanted a smooth shilf, I should used the Ford parts.
Any suggestions or comments from anyone having a transmission rebuilt w/o Ford parts. Thanks

Yes, direct clutches in the drum that make 3rd and 4th gear work. You may want to consider a hardened stub shaft and a new drum along with the new clutches.

You can get a Street/strip performance tranny for less than $2200 from B&M

If your car is stock with no power adder, I would probably just get a Ford reman with the 3 year warranty, around 3k installed IIRC.

If you want a performance trans, there are quite a few options available, most will be dependent on what your looking to achieve.

In hindsight, I wish I would have bought a Monster transmission instead of getting it rebuilt by a complete moron.

Is there any validity to the numbers matching for value of the marauder. If so, then a rebuild is the only way to go.

Im sure in about 20 years numbers matching will be a plus, but i dont ever forsee these cars being a huge collector car.

If I recall correctly the transmissions are not serialized. So the Vincent of "numbers matching" does not apply.

Do you rev high? I would replace the snap ring with a locking spiral ring (sonnax part #76554RK).
I burned out my direct clutches and started to lose 3rd and 4th. Here's what mine looked like after I took it apart:

Great advice. I did this to mine, along with other big and small upgrades.

+1! for the price of the rebuild you can outright replace it with a better unit. TCI is another vendor and I think the shipping is free (or cheap).

The typical shipping for a new unit is costly, plus you have to ship your old one back or they won't credit you back a hefty core charge.
