My starter is on its way out. I ordered a new one from Rock Auto. Bought a Motor Craft. Is it really necessary to mark gear teeth to veiw contact pattern. Then install start a few times then pull & re check contact pattern. Or can I just bolt it up & forget about it ?

Should be able to bolt it in and use it.

I was under the same impression just plug & play. Is checking for starter shim adjustment old school ?
