Ok so i started my car and got a strange noise from the passenger side of the engine near the camshaft cover. Their also was a ticking noise coming from the exhaust manifolds near the cats i believe. The camshaft cover noise subsided so i drove home i still heard a ticking noise coming from the exhaust as i accelerated. I got home and heard a strange grinding noise coming from my rear end or rear brakes only when i stepped on the gas. I held on the brakes and stepped on the gas and heard a loud metal grinding noise as the rear tires had begun to almost spin as if i was doing a burnout. I had my traction control off...idk if im explaining this right i was told by someone they it could just be my brakes. My brakes have been squeaking any have any advice ? :argue::help:

2003 had the rear axle shaft issues..not properly hardened by supplier and bearings wear a groove in them.., however you don't have that many miles yet..could be brakes..i'm guessing the emergency-brake shoes came apart as they often rot and disintegrate nnd are caught up in the mini drum for the ebrakes.

You could try your ebrake and see if it holds or you gotta pull the wheel and the rear rotor/drum off...You often have to adjust the ebrakes to allow the drum portion to slip over them, especially if a groove has been worn in them, that is done thru a small rubber plug on the backing plate by adjusting the star wheel. It's not necessarily a hard job, can be difficult getting it back together. having brakes tools helps..I'm not certain yours is that issues, but the car is 11 years old and ebrakes get overlooked alot and the last rear brake job I did had nothing left of the brake material..all the rivets rusted off..ebrakes would not have worked anyway. it was metal on metal and all rusted like it had been that way for years.

pic of star wheel with wheel/rotor/drum off..can;t see it with them on and can only sdjust it thru the small window inthe backing plate with a screwdriver or brake spoon tool..thsi is what adjsuts how far aprt the sheos are spread before the cable engages them

Not sure of safe to drive..jack up the rear end and slowly spin each wheel by hand if it rubs and grinds like something is loose, caught in it then I would not..If it spins freely with no noise then drive it and see if the hub/rim gets overly hot..if it does then a caliper might be sticking or bearing shot or ebrake hangin up

I am quite sure the park brake shoes are bonded -- not riveted. The lining is very thin, and not suitable as an "emergency" brake -- ergo Ford calls it a parking brake.

Now, "Ninoblack1" -- if you are hearing all those noises, may I suggest you take it to your mechanic?

update - took it to my mechanic it didnt make any of the previous noises. i forgot to mention that all the noises were made when on an incline. The mechanic said my brakes were good but i may need to change the rotors soon he didnt check the parking brake.
