Is anyone interested in doing a ghost tour at Waverly (http://therealwaverlyhills.com/newsite/toursghost-hunts/)? For those that have already been, want to go again?

This would be during Louisville 2014 on the evening of Friday April 4.

My wife and I used to work there, I never saw anything but she did on the 5th floor. I stayed in the main stairwell for about an hour and a half one night waiting for "people" to come down from the upper floors. No one ever came down and the other guards forgot I was in the building.

Isn't the fifth floor where the nun took her own life??? I know back when I was in my early 20s, went up therre and something...I felt made me unable to go in...this was back when the basements and floors of the out lying buildings were still there and it wasn't guarded or even thought about being restored...it is an aweinspiring and intimidating place for sure...

We were told it was a nurse who was pregnant and thought she had TB or did have TB. Room 502 was the nurses locker room and that is supposedly where it happened. We worked up there in summer and fall of 2002 before alot of the work has begun to restore it. Now when I see it, I hardly recognize it.

Can't keep all the "stories" straight any more. They have done alot. I was keeping up with the renovations and the first time I saw the windows in I was like NOOOOOOOOO, cause they were always open, then I was like SWEEEET!!!

We were going down West Pages the other day and my wife saw the Tower through the trees. At first she didn't recognize it, but then realized what it was and commented that it looked odd from that angle.

My wife's grandmother died in this facility in 1923.

We feel the current owners are exploiting the place for monetary gain, and the attention Waverly has received on TV has fueled a frenzied public interest with a lot of embellished non-sense and tales of things that never were.

We fail to see the allure, and wish that people chomping at the bit to join in such misguided adventures would instead consider being more respectful of the families in the region whose loved ones were hospitalized here. It would seem unlikely that any of you would be signing up for such a festivity if one of your family members had been a patient at this hospital.

First, respect your opinion,but...my wife had a great aunt and uncle that were patients there and although it is a place of sadness a lot of people were cured. The current owners are in the process of restoring the place for reuse. It sat vacant for decades and was,by a past owner attempted to be destroyed. If an ounce of good can come out of this place even if it is the scare factor so much the better. The building should be saved for future generations so that the history of the place does not fade.

No disrespect to your family and their loss but to be completely accurate, your wife's grandmother passed in the old building which was torn down after the completion of the current building in 1926. I visited this place several times before I started working there and I can say without a doubt the history, respect, and stories of all those who were involved are much better off now than they were 15 years ago when Charlie and Tina bought the property.

OK, guys, your points have been duly noted.

As historical reference, here is some info my wife posted a couple of years back that puts a face on this issue.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium~

This was my beloved grandmother Hazel Howell. She died many years before I was born from Tuberculosis at the now world famous Waverly Hills Sanitorium~

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f9xBe-ams8s/Tt-_zS_nQ9I/AAAAAAAAX_w/_ZW4VK0Z8e0/s400/My+Grandmother+2+of+3.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f9xBe-ams8s/Tt-_zS_nQ9I/AAAAAAAAX_w/_ZW4VK0Z8e0/s1600/My+Grandmother+2+of+3.jpg)

Waverly Hills Sanitorium took 2 years to build and opened in 1926. The top 3 floors had open air solariums where all patients were taken daily for 13 hours, 365 days a year. The electric blanket came about as a result of these patients needing fresh air every day, even in the cold winter months~http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DLvZCDYn56c/Tt-4N2hoGsI/AAAAAAAAX9w/A7prCfQThMY/s640/DSC_0833.JPG (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DLvZCDYn56c/Tt-4N2hoGsI/AAAAAAAAX9w/A7prCfQThMY/s1600/DSC_0833.JPG)

This bottle of wine on display was dated 1923, the same year that my grandmother passed away in what was to have been the first Waverly Hills Hospital. They began the building of the larger building one year later, right next to the first building~

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t7gJd8yeOGo/Tt-4OqUMbiI/AAAAAAAAX-I/ONoO8ltedH0/s640/Waverly%2BHills.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t7gJd8yeOGo/Tt-4OqUMbiI/AAAAAAAAX-I/ONoO8ltedH0/s1600/Waverly%2BHills.jpg)

The morgue was having to deal with over 24 deaths per day at the worst time of the TB epidemic and 64,000 patients lost their lives in this hospital before a cure was found~

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-umJ3xyVZdwE/Tt-4O2WYzCI/AAAAAAAAX-U/WLiEdntHn0o/s640/Waverly%2BHills-2.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-umJ3xyVZdwE/Tt-4O2WYzCI/AAAAAAAAX-U/WLiEdntHn0o/s1600/Waverly%2BHills-2.jpg)

This is the one room where all surgeries were performed. The physicians would use a method by which they would puncture and then deflated the lung and then place sandbags on the patient for a long number of days and then re inflate the lung in hopes that the lung would be stronger~

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-91HeNXkVOAA/Tt-4PDbsWjI/AAAAAAAAX-g/MeUKQ_X8WC0/s640/Waverly%2BHills-5.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-91HeNXkVOAA/Tt-4PDbsWjI/AAAAAAAAX-g/MeUKQ_X8WC0/s1600/Waverly%2BHills-5.jpg)

The "body chute"...used first for deliveries of food and things needed to run the facility. When it came about that one patient was dying every hour, those living became discouraged and so since the morgue was at opposite end of the chute, the administration decided that this would be the best way to exit the bodies, so the surviving patients did not have to witness it~

Many of the patients had large rooms with their own bathrooms. Others were housed in wards depending on their individual needs. Once the patients became near death, they were moved to small, more private rooms, and new patients moved in to the larger rooms, never leaving any empty beds, they were constantly filling up, as patients passed away~

Room 502 is the one room where even a worst tragedy occurred while all of the disease was going rampant. It may be the most famous section of the hospital. One of the head nurses hanged herself in this room in 1928. She was 29, single and pregnant, possibly by one of the leading physicians there. Then in the same room in 1932, another nurse who had worked in room 502, jumped to her death from a hospital balcony~

Women lived on one floor, some with children, while other children were in a children's ward, if they had no family. Men had their own floor~

Nice pics. I was only up there once when you weren't supposed to be up there and I can tell you from my point of veiw it felt like hollowed ground. Even around the buildings that had nothing left but the floor and basement. There was an erie calm but also a kinda peace to the place. The aura I was getting would not alow me to go in. It is because of this I want to see it brought back to something useful, and maybe start some happier memories. But I think as a consequence of this we're gonna lose some of the aura that surrounds the place. I haven't been on any of the tours yet but I would think and hope they are done with respect to all that have come and gone from there in the past...
