View Full Version : Mounting spare tire under trunk

So I just finished my sound system in my trunk, I built a bandpass box to the specs of my subs and ported it up through the rear deck, sounds great. Naturally I left space in the trunk on the side of the box to place the spare tire. Unfortunately I did not leave enough space to actually get the spare tire into that space from outside of the trunk :shake:
So now it is in a trash bag in my back seat. The rear end is high enough off the ground that I don't see any problem with mounting the spare tire under the trunk and I'm exploring how to do that. One thing is that the sub box takes up most of the trunk (see pic) so I'll have to build a custom mount. I was thinking about drilling bolts on either side of the bottom of the trunk (sub box is bolted down through floor of trunk) putting some kind of straight metal bar with a hole in the middle across the width of the trunk and then basically hanging the tire from that. Will get a little dirtier to change a tire but it's already a dirty task so hey. Has anyone done this on the Marauder or another car? Any ideas are appreciated, can't seem to find much info about this.

Underside of the trunk will be quite low to the ground, the trunk already sits fairly low on the car. No room to have the tire vertically in the trunk somehow?

Looks like it would fit just fine between the sound system and bumper.

if its a full size, you could just swap it out for a space saver.

There isn't space for it to go in vertically, the gap between the box and the trunk wall is small, it's a little hard to see in the pic.
Getting a smaller tire is an option, it would be nice if I could get the tire under the car though so I could use what little space is left in the trunk.
Taking another look I forgot about the black box looking deal that's directly under the trunk, what is that exactly? If I could move that over and mount the tire in that spot, there are other parts of the car that would hit the ground before the tire would. I could be wrong.
And I have whatever came stock because its 10 years old, I just bought the car about 6 months ago.

And can you post pictures of the port in the rear deck? I am planning on doing a ported enclosure for a T110D2 through the factory hole in the rear deck eventually. I do like your setup just takes up a lot of space. :)

Now I knew I would get some good ideas here, I just wish I had known earlier they would be so classy! I just put in an order for a 5th wheel mount, 7 swanger rims and a gold plated/red white and blue themed tow behind luggage compartment (the other two swangers are for this bad boy!!!)
Yeah ditching the tire would be the easiest, but at my job we drive 50-60 hours a week, not in my personal vehicle, but it's very common that we get flats and I've become accommodated to having an extra tire to the point where it just makes me uneasy to drive around without one, especially between cities, I don't like the idea of being stuck anywhere :burnout:
I mean I don't know, if it clearly isn't going to work I'll move on but at least with the tire I have it seems like something could work, the plastic of the bumper extends down a little farther than the actual bottom of the trunk does - it's a little higher off the ground.

Yeah I'm planning on making a post with the audio and lighting mods I did as I got a lot of help from people on the board looking at old posts and write ups, as well as asking a bunch of questions, so I'm gonna try to get cracking on it sometime this weekend.
Where the port comes out into the cabin is actually the only part that isn't finished - I had to cut the cloth on the rear deck which I will explain in more detail later, I'm planning on making some sort of grill to cover it with, or covering it with acoustic cloth that matches the interior
And I agree it takes up too much space, but I build a ported box in the trunk which sounded awesome....until I put the back seats back in and the volume was cut in half

I know some of the replies arent what you wanted. However, you added an accessory to your vehicle which requires a lot of space. Trust me I have been there done that. Im a bass head too. But in this cars case (Marauder) the trunk design is pretty unique. You could probably strap a donut spare under the car but it would be low to the ground. Maybe next time you design an enclosure you incorporate the spare tire (mini or full sized) into your design vs making it an afterthought. To put it plain and simply you are pretty much screwed. The only thing I can see is getting a small space saver spare from a 300B or 2004 Panther and putting it on the left side of the sub enclosure with a "trimmed off decorative cover". Otherwise re-design your enclosure with the spare in place. Just my .02. And Ill be it sounds 10x better ported into the cabin vs ported in the trunk. HTH

I'm afraid I have no magic solution for the spare tire issue. I am interested in your trunk-mount battery setup. If you don't mind, please describe the battery mounting setup and how you routed the cable.

Did Ford ever use the spares that you had to air up with the supplied can like '78 Camaros had? That is nice and small.

Your best bet is to rebuild the box with more complex shapes to utilize the trunk dead space more & provide space for spare. Calculating ft^3 will be challenging. Box doesn't need to only be a cube.

Yeah it sucks because the tire really almost fits, I just can't quite squeeze it past the box, well RF I have no idea what the hell that means so I guess I shouldn't start pulling it apart and moving it around

How I ran the wire is described in this excellent post by JoeBoomz which I referenced many times thoughout the install

As for the battery mount, I built it out of spare MDF, it also holds the amp for the subs, which was all it was originally supposed to do. Basically the the amp is on a flat piece of wood bolted to that little platform on right side of trunk. When i realized I needed a second battery I made an upside down |_| piece and put it on top of the amp, screwed into the original board. The battery is on top of the upside down |_| and is secured the same way it's secured up front, I cut some small blocks and staggered them to hook the battery down and used T nuts to screw the blocks in so I can take the battery in and out. Battery is grounded to frame via the grommet on the right side of the trunk (both sides have it though) again when I can I'll post pics and explanation of everything as I received alot of help from the board
Edit - reason I'm not rebuilding the box is this is the exact specs I needed it to be, and given the dimensions of the trunk it barely barely fits, I actually had to assemble it inside of the car, it's three separate pieces because there was no way to get it all in at once. I'm sure I could move the dimensions around a tiny bit but it wouldn't be worth the effort to redesign that thing, it's a bandpass built to the exact specs of the subs and it's been a big enough pita as it is, I think I may just get a smaller spare at this point

Smaller spare or does it fit deflated? You could also carry a cigarette lighter powered air pump for if you need to use the spare.

Someone else mentioned that I must have looked over it, that actually might work because it really almost fits. I'll try that tonight and see what happens!

Now there's an idea!! Imagine the peace of mind! :D
Well I think my solution is going to be to keep a tire plugging kit and little dc powered air pump I have in the trunk, and if the thing blows out yes yes I'll call AAA!
Run flat tires do work well but they make the ride a lot rougher, I had them on another vehicle.

Just a tip: whenever using a compressor, make sure your car is running, underpowering a compressor will shorten its lifespan.

Mount this ...

*Marauder 2003 300B | 2004 temporary spare.
To the underside of the deck/trunk lid. It weighs only 30Lbs (18" aluminum, painted-black rim) and the existing tie-down hook hardware could probaby be used. You would have to increase the tension in the deck/trunk lid's torsion bar to accomdate keeping the trunk deck/lid open while it's attached.

Sorry Joe but I don't believe increasing the torsion bar tension will work. I have a decklid cover made out of masonite and carpet and unless the car is on level ground or front end on the down slope the decklid won't stay open by itself.
