Flex plate cover

Today I was driving through a "touchless" automatic car wash. As I was driving through and the water was spraying the undercarriage I began to hear this loud ugly rattle from underneath the car.

I looked underneath and saw the flex plate cover on the bottom of the bellhousing bouncing around in place. Bolts still secured. I got home and wiggled it out.

So any ideas what could have caused it to crack off at the bolts? I'll be replacing it this weekend but just wanna know what happened.

Metal fatigue, rust, tightened too much.... could be a number of things.

Easy find at a Trans shop, or bone yard.
