View Full Version : Does anyone know how/if Jerry's "bulletproof 4r70w" applies to the 4r75w?

Just purchased my first MM from MMBLUE this past weekend and I'm still grinning!

Car is in great shape!

I would like to gather the parts required to build my 4r75w (130K) on my own schedule before it decides for me.

The car has a paxton novi 1200, so I imagine I'm already on borrowed time, and this thing feels like its gonna need a little stall to get moving anyways.

I've rebuilt a few AODs back in the day, even transplanted the 4r70w gearset into my last AOD for my TBIRD supercoupe. Car always had half decent torque, enough to snap the input shaft ;)

I'm just curious of which of clutchpacks need the additional plates, etc. I read the planetary gears have been updated, curious if the clutch packs are similar enough to use the info in Jerrys writeups?

Has anyone built their 4r75w ?

The internals are identical with the exception of a few hard parts that are metalurgically stronger.

So what brand of cluthces/steels do these things like?

I see the Red alto, and the raybestos.

I had some guidance from a fella at baumann engineering, who supplied me with the rebuild kit for my AOD, and the guideance for a few details...

There is no reason to go inside it at your power level.
Just do a J-Mod if it doesn't already have one.

Its got 130K, and I'm thinking of a stall converter. So if the tranny gets pulled, it'll get rebuilt.

I've seen what happens internally when the 4r70w TC has the plastic washers fail, which is another reason to swap the converter... PTC is pretty local to me, and I've had some luck with their converters in the past. If I take it to him, I can drop it off and he'll build it for 200 bucks or so anyways. Or would I really nee a 10" converter??? Aint figured it all out yet.

Mileage does not matter if it was taken care of.

I suggest a converter from CircleD

Yes, Jerry's article applies to the 4R75. However, even with machining the pistons as he mentions, you can NOT fit 8 clutches in the direct drum. myself and others have tried numerous times and just doesn't work.

For your power level, rebuild with stock clutches. Raysbestos or borgwarner are the best. There are a few Ford rebuild kits pop up on eBay from time to time, at a reasonable price. Alto red clutches are absolute garbage, don't waste your money.

I would recommend doing a 6 friction direct clutch and upgrade the forward clutch to 6 frictions by removing the wave spring.

Also upgrade to a 300m stub shaft.
