View Full Version : Shifting Funny

Well I've noticed in the past week the trans has been shifting funny and progressively getting a little worse everyday.(At least i think its the trans) When accelerating at about 1/2 throttle it seems to shift quickly up to third and then stumbles into the TC lockup (hangs around 2K for a couple seconds then shifts into OD). When coasting (OD locked) in 3rd and 4th I can notice a certain vibration, more like grinding noise and when i get back on the gas it stumbles a little.
Haven't checked fluid level but it was changed sometime in 2012.....cant find the receipt
Trans was rebuilt at 61K, I am currently at 81K.
:help: :help: :help:
Is there anyway to eliminate this being a possible engine issue, I currently have no CEL's or codes, OD light is not blinking or anything

Does it feel like driving over rumble strips? Are you sure whoever changed the fluid used Mercon V?

when coasting yes it does...... and as far as i know yes, the shop was an ASE certified shop highly recommended by car shops and dealers in the area

But did they use Mercon V? Could have used other fluid and added an additive to "make" it Mercon V.
Check the fluid level.

when coasting yes it does...... Where I was going was the infamous torque converter clutch shudder, but that only happens on acceleration, not coasting or decel, and I've never heard of a misfire being felt on decel either.
Sounds like you have something more unusual happening...

It shifts rather fast and jumpy on acceleration, and sounds like it grinds on deceleration and coasting, but only in 3rd and 4th when the TC is locked, my A/F gauge pegs at 17.0 when coasting in 3rd and 4th, and stays at 14.9-15.0 when coasting in 1st and 2nd

#1, Check fluid.
#2, Don't worry about AFR on any deceleration. The PCM tells the injectors to shut off on coasting in a typical tune. CFSO (Coasting Fuel Shut Off)
#3, The fact that 20k ago this trans was rebuilt is a bit worrisome. Who did the work and what was done?

checked fluid and it wasnt even reading on the dipstick and the very end of the stick had little pieces of black stuff on it (wasnt metallic more like paper)......:mad2:
went to autozone and added about a quart and a half before i got it into the crosshairs on the dipstick, car feels alot better now, but still seems to stumble a little engaging OD
is there anything i should look at replacing inside of the transmission since its been running like this for almost a year, probably the OD band:confused:
Sounds like you are in for another repair. It wont be cheap.

Isn't a Pell grant supposed to go towards school? Hmmm we didn't qualify for anything for the wife for a Pell grant even... Pissed me off.
Black material is a bad sign. I agree with Zach, rebuild is in order without a doubt. If it's not a near term solution drain / change filter / new fluid at a min.

Its worth a shot to prolong the life, but if its noticeable even with correct fill amount its most likely wiped out that specific clutch set.
As long as your not gonna be one of the people whom complains about their student debt and spent half of it on frivolous things while in school... Know far to many people like that!
Last comment I promise.. I feel if you served for this country in the Military (not public office) you do deserve to have your school paid for. I think that is a good use of the tax payers money.

yea driving with the music off the whole way home today I realized its acting up in all gears, even when i start the car it revs to about 2K like normal but on the way down to idle it vibrates alot more than it should, then it settles at idle rpm and sounds normal,
thanks for the chart!!

yea ill try and get it drained and refilled along with filter replacement soon, and as far as student loans go I wont have any unless obama takes away the veterans benefits, but since we paid into it while on active duty, they kinda cant take it away.....hopefully:(

I would say I'm an beginner almost intermediate shade tree mechanic.....you guys think this is something I can do in my garage, i know certain specialty tools are needed but I think i could take it apart and diagnose the issue myself
just got off the phone with a trans shop local and they said a full rebuild would be around 2000 and thats back to oem specs, I would like to possibly do the upgraded internal along with the jmod, it seems I can get performance 4r70W rebiuld kits for less than 1000, but thats if i do the work myself
So what im really asking is how hard would it be to rip it apart and replace components with quality upgrades...??

I support taking it to a known builder or martyo since you already have a relationship with him.
Pell grants are for need based students to use for education / books / living expenses to support higher education. It's not money to build a transmission in a modified car. It's abuse of a loan program. If your tuition is paid why do you 'NEED' the Pell grant? I'm sorry but my taxes are helping to fund this program while we can't get anything... I don't live a lap of luxury. I have a mortgage, car payments and a $12k tuition bill to pay for the wife.

Using a Pell Grant for other than it's intended use is wrong and taking advantage of us taxpayers. I'm sure there is someone out there that has a greater need for a Pell Grant.

well i dont feel like im abusing it, its just so happens my trans took a **** right at the time when I'm supposed to get the money.....and many students recieve the pell grant through checks to the individual, who knows what those students are doing with the money , I gave up 5 years of my freedom so that I can get paid to go to school afterwards, it was one of my main reasons for joining. I helped pay my own wage for the last 5 years which for the amount of work we do aint much. Our military is overworked and underpaid and this helps alleviate these things.....end of rant

If you’re eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, you’ll receive the full amount you qualify for—each school participating in the program receives enough funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education to pay the Federal Pell Grant amounts for all its eligible students. The amount of any other student aid for which you might qualify does not affect the amount of your Federal Pell Grant.

This is one of the entitlements earned to those who serve...whether it's 4 years or 24....after putting down an initial investment into the system when you are sworn in ($1200 in my case back in 1991).
So go ahead and point fingers....and yes, I sleep just fine at night.
You guys are missing the point....we only get this money if we go to school full-time.
yup veterans FTMFW!!! its still the initial $1200 still
Kit is plus the rebuild correct? Kit is just the parts. Still the labor time. This is also a good time to put a stall converter in to match the blower.

In defense of a fellow soldier, the OP is well within the rules of both the VA and the Department of Education.
Read below and educate yourselves. Pell Grants are awarded based on financial need using the FAFSA application. They are NOT restricted to tuition and are therefore NOT reported to VA. VA covers the tuition and the school cuts a check to the student for the balance of the Pell Grant. This money may be used for fees, books, transportation, meals, living expenses, or anything that the student wishes. Technically, the MM transmission would be covered under transportation. He has done nothing wrong. No fraud and no stealing involved. You may NOT like it ..... but those are the current rules.
You can use Pell Grants with your GI Bill. Your school will need to determine whether or not another type of grant can be used with the GI Bill. The rule is that the Post 9/11 GI Bill is always the last payer of tuition. Any grants/scholarships that are restricted to only paying tuition/fees must be applied to your tuition/fee charges prior to the amount of tuition/fee charges being reported to Dept. of VA. Pell Grants are not restricted to only being used to pay tuition/fees - so they do not count against what is reported to the VA to pay the school.
CFDA Number: 84.063
Also Known As: Pell Grants; formerly called Basic Educational Opportunity Grants (BEOGs)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate and certain postbaccalaureate students to promote access to postsecondary education. Students may use their grants at any one of approximately 5,400 participating postsecondary institutions. Grant amounts are dependent on: the student's expected family contribution (EFC) (see below); the cost of attendance (as determined by the institution); the student's enrollment status (full-time or part-time); and whether the student attends for a full academic year or less.
Students may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from more than one school at a time.
Financial need is determined by the U.S. Department of Education using a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the financial information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to determine the family EFC. The fundamental elements in this standard formula are the student's income (and assets if the student is independent), the parents' income and assets (if the student is dependent), the family's household size, and the number of family members (excluding parents) attending postsecondary institutions. The EFC is the sum of: (1) a percentage of net income (remaining income after subtracting allowances for basic living expenses and taxes) and (2) a percentage of net assets (assets remaining after subtracting an asset protection allowance). Different assessment rates and allowances are used for dependent students, independent students without dependents, and independent students with dependents. After filing a FAFSA, the student receives a Student Aid Report (SAR), or the institution receives an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR), which notifies the student if he or she is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and provides the student's EFC.
Federal Pell Grants are direct grants awarded through participating institutions to students with financial need who have not received their first bachelor's degree or who are enrolled in certain postbaccalaureate programs that lead to teacher certification or licensure. Participating institutions either credit the Federal Pell Grant funds to the student's school account, pay the student directly (usually by check) or combine these methods. Students must be paid at least once per term (semester, trimester, or quarter); schools that do not use formally defined terms must pay the student at least twice per academic year.

well back to the topic at hand here are my options:
1. Have local shop repair/rebuild trans most offering warranty but back to OEM specs(with current power level and upgrades coming down the road i really don't want it back to stock specs)
2. Buy already built transmission online most coming with warranties and made to handle all the power I probably will ever see (but this requires me taking out the trans and installing new my myself, without a lift in my garage this will be a PITA, I've also helped do it on other cars before.)
3. Buy performance rebuild kit and replace things myself(once again no lift, requires buying certain speciality tools, and no guarantee I do it correctly:D)
4. Send car to martyo with or without performance kit and have him do his thang!!! lol (but 4 1/2 hour drive or tow)
I'm leaning towards steps 2 & 4 since I know the trans's will be built to my liking and last a lot longer given i check the fluids every once and a while :rolleyes:
But option 1 offers me the fastest and most convenient way to get my car back on the road.
and with option 3 I save the most money even though there is a lot more room for error on my part.

Option 4. Any of those ways you spend money, id rather spend the money, know it was done right, and not be worried about if and when its going to break again. This way your confident that you can drive it anywhere. Transmissions arent a bolt on part man, theres a bunch of stuff to be correct, or it falls apart. I wouldn't attempt to touch the innards of my tranny with a 10 ft pole, some stuff is better left to a professional.

nothing actually, the car has been parked in the same spot every night since novemeber and havent noticed any puddles......it could be that little plastic plug that covers up some gear, saw it mentioned somewhere in another transmission thread could just be leaking when its warmed up, with it dripping while im driving???......

If you look under the car I would assume you would see fluid down the underbody or at least down the trans somewhere. I am not sure of the plug you are referencing however.
How much did you put in it to get it up to the proper reading? Did check it after a ~10 mile drive as well right?
Don't get me wrong material in there is not good regardless. Just double checking :)

In fairness to him, I have noticed if you pull the stick out a few times and put it back in the inside of the tube gets coated with fluid and it can make the stick look like it's full.
I have to pull it, wipe, insert, wipe, etc a few times to get an accurate reading. I have found one MM that the person said it was full and it was almost 2 quarts low (spun up in neutral when hard stopping or hard turning).
The multiple bends in the MM tube may have somethign to do with this.

Don't rule out that numerous sensors such as MAF, TPS, speed sensor, and many others are what control the trans and torque converter. I realize you found debris, but that would definitely not be my first time seeing some junk in a low on oil perfectly running trans with a faulty sensor. (Usually the very same sensor that is the root cause of the early wear)

A drain & fill takes just about 3.75 quarts (4 if you drop the pan and replace the filter). I simply replace that much and confirm that the level is approximately right on the dipstick, then wait a couple of days to check it more accurately and adjust as necessary. Checking it right after refilling gives wonky readings.

yea have to figure out how to get the pan off without swimming in trans fluid......no drain plug for this guy......

Pull the line going to the tranny cooler, the line closest to the outside/ wheel is the 'out' from the pan. Start the car, and turn off when the fluid start sputtering. Helps to have 2 people. At this point most of the fluid is out of the pan...your next step is to put a drain plug in it. Local flaps should have a drain plug kit ~$3, with a hollow bolt and nut that locks onto a hole you drill into the pan, and a smaller bolt that screws into the hollow bolt that serves as the drain plug.

Yes. Data logging, wiggle test, testing the sensors themselves. Never just throw parts at it.
Here is a good article for testing some of it. Most of it is using a simple multimeter.

so technically i can drive around data logging all appropriate sensors to see if their ok??? I've only done it once before for the fuel pump..
and dont usually when these sensors go bad they throw codes and junk......it wasnt like it just started out of nowhere, it got progressively worse to where its stuck at now..
justbob
02-28-2014, 05:44 PM
Mostly sensor testing and no, many times it refuses to throw codes. Not saying you don't have a bad trans, just reminding you it is commanded by the PCM to do everything it does with input fed to it by a number of sensors and the info they are providing.
One example, just having a bad brake light switch or burned out bulbs can stall your engine while stopping by not unlocking the torque converter.. Thats how in depth something's can be.
There is also copies online of the 4R70/75 Ford shop manual that give in depth descriptions of symptoms and related causes.
