I picked up the car yesterday at the ford dealer. I had them install the ford motor sport gear set I had in my garage for a couple of years.I talked to the tech that did the job. Told him I didnt want any noise coming from them.. I have had Mustangs in the past that had to be redone several times.. he assured me he had all the right tools and had done many gear swaps.. When I drove it home, just a few miles. I could hear whining noise coming from the back on very light acceleration or when slowing down.. I don't know if I should wait and see if it gets better with miles or take it back right away..
BTW.. they charged me 7.1 hours labor.. But I had a $400 gift cert that I won there during a radio promotion on black Friday when I was there getting a new battery and oil change..
So what do you all think is the problem?.. I want to go back well armed so it can be done right..
Thanks

What kind of arming do you need?
The gears are setup incorrectly. Take the tech for a ride. There should be no noise whatsoever if they were setup correctly.
Take it back.

Possibly the crush sleeve on the pinion was overdone/torqued throwing off the pinon slightly when not under load or the go pedal. Im no expert..Zack or justbob or Martyo or one of the other memebrs with lots more knowledge than me will reply..I;ve only seen the above happen so I'm relaying the info.
The backlash is wrong.
It needs to be done over.
I made friends with Ford tech tears ago....I get them done for $250 after hours.

Thanks.. everybody.. shes going back to the tech.. I'm sure they will make it right..
BTW.. thanks to fast black merc.. for the LCM.. had that swaped out as well .. also had the SS brake line installed from TCE.. they called and told me the kit had the wrong bolts in it.. and they would have to use the old ones.. WTF.. Is there two different thread sizes?

Make sure you take it back immediately, drive it like that too long and your gears will be toast.

Zack is right as usual! This is what happened to mine with a funny noise that got progressively worse:
(The shop had all the proper Ford tools and knowledge also)

Just a 3rd or 4th that properly setup gears make no noise. Sounds like they charged you book amount for the swap. Did they give you any instructions on how to drive it at 1st? My guy told me easy for a couple hundred miles and to do figure 8s in a parking lot to set them and make sure there were no problems. Mine have been in for about 4 years, no noise. Had a rebuild kit put in at the same time.

Ok.. thanks for moving this to shop talk.. rayjay.. the figure 8s in the parking lot sounds like fun.. I think I will wait till they get the noise to go away..
Mrs hadamustang is taking back to the dealer right now.. She could hear the noise too.. so I know I'm not being overly critical..

I had a local mech install mine....that was his specialty, swapping gears (mostly on mustangs). Took him just under 3 hours, have had no noise, and when I asked about 'taking it easy', he said "you can get on it as soon as you leave...we'll both know right away if I did it right or not". Of course, I know this is subject to opinion, and I didn't go WOT for the first time until at least the next day....;)

I remember my buddy installed some gears in his friend's Marauder a couple years back. Soon as the car left the garage, brake torqued two nice crispy rubber strips down the block. Car has been fine since with no issues.

Low speed figure 8s immediately after the install. I would leave it parked until you return it.

No reason to fear the gear, just get a competent installer , i had mines installed by Drivetrain specialties in Warren MI, and they are as quiet as a church mouse!

Took them two times to get mine right too.
First time I provided Ford Racing bearings set, second time I went with SKF.
No problems since, quiet as factory.

I had mine installed by Mathewsons in Renton. They primarily work on modded mustangs and hotrods of any sort. No noise at all even after 20k on them, although they did tell me to change the oil after 1000 miles and add the friction modifier. I did that on top of royal purple. Only issue was a leaking pinion seal and an axle seal at about 18k.

So car still in shop.. said they were going to replace the forward pinion bearing ,,they replace the back one the other day.. I know the noise probably has more to do with pinion depth and torque than with bearings.. but every time they take it apart I get new free bearings and or seals.. and the tech gets a edumacation.. LOL
With it being at a Ford dealer with the parts dept. right there.. I know sooner or later they will get it right..
So far one free oil change and a car wash as well..

If you find the right person, its not an issue. I lucked out and had a Ford Master Tech who runs the Ford Assest Program at a local college do mine.

More than likely you are looking at loose pinion preload. After that is corrected, they will need to start over with shimming the carrier to set the tooth pattern after they determine the backlash with a dial indicator.
This is what happens when you throw some torque at a loose pinion.

I went with a solid spacer kit and obviously a new nut to ensure this did not happen again. First time doing myself, taking my time and still came in at their book time. They royally screwed you on labor. I've never paid over $300 at speed shops.
Good luck, hope this helps educate you a little so you know your facts. Trust me, it helps when they know that you know your stuff..

Btw I would very curious to hear their explanation as to why they just now feel the need to install the forward bearing when they had the chance on the original install.
I'll tell you why.
1) We have a habit of reusing worn items and don't care to make money when justified.
Can't see this one ^
2) We didn't torque it down quite enough, perhaps reused the nut, and/or just simply reused the original shims in their original pattern and figured we sell you on a new bearing so we can get in there and fix our oops.
Not likely, but my take.
Or hopefully
3) We simply made a mistake and will take care of this.
Sorry if I come off this way, but it seems only but a handful of us stand behind our work anymore and I am sick and tired of hearing excuses. This goes way beyond just mechanic work.

Thanks for the input BOB.. Like I said.. its a learning experience for the tech.. Its just not gonna be on my dime..
Anyway I can tell after its all buttoned up if it right? Other than the lack of noise.. How else can I test it out.. Slow speed figure eights with my head out the window.. And the tech in the passenger seat?

We have installed about 6 sets of 4:10's over the last year...not a single come back. If they do their job right there will be no noise...I can't fathom doing a gear swap without replacing ALL of the bearings and seals...period.

I don't mean to Hijack this thread but just thinking back in 1960's I had a 57 chevy fuely with a 3 speed stick and overdrive (overdrive added) we used to lock the rear end, you youngsters probably don't remember that but going around corners sounded like we dropped the rear end on the ground, bang, bang, shake, shudder etc. but two BLACK tire marks! Never once do I remember tearing up a ring and pinion! Was it a weight issue or stronger gears? Did go through u joints a lot, even twisted a drive shaft once, maybe thats why?

Im very happy with the way she performs now.. However when I went to change the tune .. using my ole sct2.. I bought from DR way back in the day. It seems the 410 tune was not on the device any longer.. so not to sure how to go about adjusting the speedometer..Can some one email me a new tune for the 410?..
But I dont even have a pc anymore to load the SCT software.. only use the Ipad at home..
maybe just sending the SCT to martyo and have him load some tunes on it.. would be the best thing?
just trying to keep it simple..
I know MAV2.. is my ecm code for the car.. going to be running stock size tires soon.. when I buy the Firestone wides..
meantime she is driving fine just racking up miles faster than what we are actually going..
what do you guys think?
