View Full Version : Fuel pump change, same as CV or GM

I think I need to change my fuel pump. I am going to look up instructions, but is it the same as a CV or GM?
Car will not start. I changed the air filter, fired it up and it was running fine. 1 minute later it died and would not start. It slowly died like it was running out of fuel.
I changed the fuel pump fuse, disconnected the battery for 20 minutes, messed with the fuel pump cut off button in the trunk and nothing.
I do not believe I hear the pump kick on upon start up.
So, again. Same swap as any other panther?
Anything else I should look for first?
EDIT: I will check to see if the relay clicks, have someone turn the key on while I listen by the gas cap and finally, throw a gallon of fuel in. The car is pretty low on gas right now.
A few years ago the car ran out of gas without the gas gage going past 1/8th and the reserve light never came on.
Ok, a few more things to do! I bet it's simply out of gas and the gage is malfunctioning.

What's your pressure at the rail?

I do not have that gage.
Maybe, Autozone rents them?

Did you unplug the MAF when you changed the filter?
On your question, yes the very same. Easy as can be, 30-40 minutes on a creeper.

My screen is crap, I cannot read anything.
If I can find a way to get it to Autozone, they can read it. There is one only 3 blocks away.

You could press in the schrader valve and see if pressure is present. Its on the fuel rail, drivers side, looks like a valve stem on a tire.
If pressure is there, it'll squirt out, if no pressure, itll probably just trickle or nothing.

The car was out of gas, needle was stuck.
It runs fine.
Thank you all.
Dom,
Where was the needle stuck 3/4 mark?. Lower?
I've noticed the opposite in my MM, when the needle reads nearly empty, there is four gallons left in tank. Same for my '05 Grand Marquis.
But the needle is more accurate in the Sheriff department's Crown Vic's I drive.

Same on my 150 Pat. Light on, gauge at maybe 1/8 and I still have about 5 gallons. Of course, that still means only 50 miles left. :(

It was at 1/8th with no reserve light on.
This happened once before. It's all good now.

I stopped going off the gas gauge needle and went more by miles. Plus my scan gauge can give me a fuel level readout.

Try using techron in your next tank of gas. It might free up the float as ive heard people solve the issue with it. Sounds crazy, but numerous people have had it work for them.

Your f150 only gets 10mpg? Is it a 6.2?

Sounds crazy, but numerous people have had it work for them. The issue is sulphur contamination of the fuel level sensor. Techron (and Gumout's Regane) has PEA (polyetheramine) which has been shown to help with this condition.
Do as whitey suggested. Use a bottle of either one a couple of tanks in a row and see if it helps. Don't put two bottles in one tank...more isn't better here.

5.4 supercrew. Just coming out of a long winter with extended warm ups and half the mileage probably in four wheel. Lately she's getting 11.7.

My mileage per tank just went up 40-50 miles with the release of the summer blend.
HUGE difference.
