View Full Version : Fix or repair shifter?

The shifter seems to have trouble making it out of park. I need to use both hands to push the button to free this thing.
The strange part is I can turn the ignition key to the 12 o'clock position and the shifter works fine.
No issues with reverse to drive or vice versa. Getting it out of park is a pain unless the trick for no brake lights is used.
Is the shifter not going all the way up? I shake it and nothing helps, but again when the key is halfway turned, it will come out of park like a brand new car.
Suggestions please.

Check for an obstruction on the transmission, check your cable, verify nothing is jammed in the shifter mechanism....

Sounds like you've managed to mess up the brake switch interlock somehow.
When you push the brake you should hear a click in the shifter, this is what allows it to come out of park and go into gear.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk so I may sound retarded.

I do not hear that click anymore. Should the switch be replaced or is this something I can adjust?
EDIT: I know what to look for and I think I know what is wrong.
Thank you.

You have either a bent / broken stop light switch or a wiring problem to the brake light switch. Easy to replace, most FLAPS carry them. Ask for either a CV or GM one same year as your MM.

Fixed. I need to learn how to heat wrap/shrink wrap.
It's easy
First you need the correct size heat shrink tubing
Place the heat shrink tubing on the wire / connection you want to protect
Apply heat to the tubing (use heat gun, lighter, etc.)
Watch it shrink

And remember to put it on BEFORE you connect the wires together.

I recommend going to harbor freight tools, and buying the marine heat shrink tubing assortment. Many diameters to choose, shrinks to 1/2 its original size, thick, and has a heat activated adhesive on the inside that makes it absolutely waterproof. Down side is that they're all black, no colors.

The older crowd might, but they may not want to discuss it....

Hi Motorhead350
Fix or repair shifter?
Doesn't that amount to the same thing?

I thought it was a word play on what people say Ford stands for (fix or repair daily)

Been guilty of that before a couple of times.. That always sucks. Or when you can only slide it on so far due to space and it starts to shrink when your soldering.. Sucks also!
