View Full Version : fuel pump noise at turn on

I've noticed lately I hear a "thunk" noise from the fuel tank when I turn the key and the fuel pump turns on. This sounds ominous. I'm not real keen on waiting for parts to catastrophically fail before replacement, especially those parts that leave you sitting on the side of the road.

Anybody here have their fuel pump fail? Did it start making noises at power up first?

I suppose since I have an XCal 3 I should learn to data log and see if there are any fuel pressure issues. Runs good, though.

data logging is pretty simple to do once you download the live link software, plus you can monitor all the fuel parameters and drive around a bit to see how they are doing

My stock pump remained quiet, it would just fail intermittently at WOT.

The Walbro and the Aeromotive I've had came on with a clunk since new and never once been an issue.

I'll check into using the datalogger and see if it gives me an obvious sign it should be changed now.

I think it is one thing to have a high volume aftermarket pump make a sound a turn on. But an OEM pump that has been silent all its life, and then starts making a noise . . .

My WalBro pump that was NOT recommended for a returnless fuel system currently has 170K miles on it and has gone "Buzz-Clunk" from day one.....go figger!!??:beer:

Still holds fuel pressure perfectly according to my ScanGauge!!:bows:

+1 this is the pump I would use any day for a replacement assuming it is enough to support your needs. I think I put over three years in on mine and was still perfect when removed all the while hooked up to a BAP.

has gone "Buzz-Clunk" from day one....:I can't say for certain, since The Blackbird is in winter-storage mode, but I seem to recall it goes "Buzz-Clunk" as well...never thought anything of it.

I have been able to hear mine since day one.
