Trying to figure out what is going on here. I've had a weird noise that I was confusing with a catalytic converter rattle that I've had before on a P71. I thought it was that until listening a little closer it sound like it may be coming from the timing cover. This noise( like rocks rattling in a metal cup) went on for about 2weeks. Well today my drive belt popped off about an 1/8 mile away from the house right after the same noise got wickedly louder. I was able to limp it home and as soon as I stepped out the car I could hear it puking its guts, just dumping coolant out.

Pulled it n the garage, jacked it up and can't see where the leak came from, no hoses I can see are ruptured or off, but I did notice most of the steam was coming from the area between the water pump and the crankshaft, I'm praying its not a cracked block and maybe the noise I've been hearing all this time was the water pump on its way out and it finally locked up completely and snap the drive belt off and leaked the coolant out behind it to let me know that yea its the water pump....anybody think I'm close or is there something else I should be looking for?

Probably just dumped out the relief hole underside of the pump.

I'm hoping, so does this actually confirm that the water pump is finished because I know on most cars it does

The weep hole is there for the that purpose, once the bearing goes, coolant will pass the bearing. The weep hole on the MM is on the top, if fluid is there then the wp is bad

Grab the pulley and see if it wiggles, if it does then yes the bearings are shot on the pump. Also at least check the idler/tensioner pulleys while you are at it.

Didn't you already confirm this stating it was locked up?

That was a guess as to why the belt snapped off

Any suggestions on water pumps to choose from?? Is it a fairly tough task or pretty simple??

hardest part is freeing the pump, mine was quite stubborn. Otherwise though I'd say it's one of the easiest water pumps to get to and remove. If you are NA I don't think you'll have to pull anything other than the bolts for the pump.

Four pulley bolts, five housing bolts and a dead blow. I like to put grease on the new O-ring to assist on install as to not tear it. Easy job though.

When I replace a 4.6 water pump I just use a little fresh coolant on the o-ring as Ford recommends in the factory manual....never had a problem with tearing an o-ring.

You can go with a stock replacement for a few bucks, or go the performace route and get a EMP performance water pump from Summit racing for around $150.
I have one in my car for years now with no problems.

Just replaced my pump last night. Wasn't in the mood to order one. I just bought a new one for $45 down the street.

You would have made it so much easier if you pulled the cooling fan out. Takes less then 5 minutes and opens up so much more room.

I agree. I should have.

It was still pretty easy. But I'm with ya. I should have removed the fan.

LOL sounds like sumthn I would do....once the 4 pulley bolts come off shouldn't the pulley just come right off? Bcuz it wiggling and moving but won't come all the way off yet. O yea its been a month and I'm just now getting around to this job I'm terrible...car has just been sitting on jackstands since

Hey I'm seeing two different part#s for the emp water pump, a STE50046S and a STE50046L, which one is the one for our cars? Both sell for $120 free shipping on summit.

I don't know how you guys remove the cooling fan without draining that dumb coolant reservoir. I absolutely do not have the wiggle room to get that thing up and out of the way.

Yea I didn't even bother taking the fan out just now, ended getting the pulley free and the pump free with a lil pry bar persuasion....now which is the right emp water pump to order?

I believe "L" is the long shaft. We use the short shaft pump.
