Is the factory driveshaft aluminum?

Doing some exhaust work on the Merc and noticed that the driveshaft is heavy duty aluminum unit. Is this the factory unit, or did the previous owner save me money?

Nothing special ... Just a set of Flowmaster Super 44 .... Sounds great!
