Blown engine so it's got to be removed. As the title says, I would like to know what are some things you guys have done to make it easier for yourself that would help and make it easier for me taking it out and putting it back in when the new shortblock gets here. I've never done anything remotely close to this (there is a first for everything) but have always wanted to, just never had any reason. I am ordering a shop repair manual set also.
So far I have started to put tape to each wire that connects to another and numbered them so that I know where what goes where when i have to start connecting things again
As always thanks for your help

I use a piece of cardboard to keep my bolts straight. Just push 'em through and they'll stay there. Nice thing about this is that you can write exactly what they are.
This was from when I did timing guides on my '02 Marquis.

Nice! I have used ziplocks but never thought of this idea other than painting bolt heads or small items.

Ziplock bags, blue or green painters tape, Shapie and plenty of pictures. Look into getting a Ford Shop Manual. Very good reference.

I'm digging the cardboard bolt holder!
The little stuff is what kept getting me with the Vic. Your torque converter to flywheel nuts are single use only, and probably a dealer only part. If the car has many miles at all plan on motor mounts, try and get OEM ones if possible. I didn't reuse hose clamps because I hate Ford's design.
And i'm sure you know this, but it's worth saying again, mark the hood and take it off.

Usually don't need to mark the hood, the paint will make it very clear for you where it was mounted :)

Some hoods might have shims between hinge arms and hood, tape to hinge arm location so you will know where they go back

I've been using a piece of cardboard to keep bolts organized bolts for years, works great and super cheap.

To mark the hood / hinge placement, drill a 1/8" hole thru the hinge into the hood, line up the hole(s) when reinstalling.
No need to take the hood off. Just pop the shocks off at the top and it swings all the way back.

Just watch how far it goes back! I broke the corner of my windshield doing this. Doh!

Got the workshop book couple of days ago, extremely helpful. Now I'm waiting for the weather to get warm enough. also the book states you need special lifting bracket for the right and left hand side, from the small search I've done about them they are rare. So what do guys use do to lift the engine out just chains and bolts?

In short, yes. I came off where the bracket is supposed to bolt to with an appropriate bolt/washer/chain combo. Worked fine on the 2V.

You need a good set of swivel sockets and extensions...

I read it, being that your post was after I ran out to get them and broke them, I understood what you meant when you said "good" just thought I would share cheap ones weren't up to task

Here is THE best advise on removing and installing an engine.
1: drain fluids
2: remove all connections
3: remove engine
4: install engine
5: re-secure all connections.
6: re-fill fluids.

As for the starter bolt. I believe I use a deep well 3/8" drive straight socket with a 1" or 3" extension (can't recall) That puts your ratchet in front of the starter so you can rotate it and stuffs.

With it being my first time I figured it would be a lot longer. But I can see if you know what you are doing, this could be done in a few hours

I'll give you some good advice I was never told. Remove the wiper assembly. You would be amazed at the newly discovered real-estate. Also, to my knowledge all connectors are idiot proof, meaning if it don't fit, your putting it in the WRONG HOLE! :)
No need to remove hood either. Just pop the struts off and raise it higher with a support. Do as little removal of stuff as possible, plenty of more available room on the engine stand.

I use two folding picnic tables and set the parts on them starting at the far end and working back. This way I don't have to remeber the exact order of installation, I just use the parts in reverse order off the table.
The second thing I do is take A LOT of pictures (close up and distant) of where all the wiring harnesses go across other wires and fuel lines and the how the vacuum lines run over under everthing. The engine harness runs down both sides of the front of the engine and clips to particular studded bolts in specific holes. The pictures help me figure out which bolts go in which holes and the order of dis-assembly.
This is especially helpfull when it sits disassembled for a few days (or weeks, or even years..lol)
I have to do that because I am not always working on the same type of car.

Well thanks to all who gave me some solid advice the engine is out. Honesty this sh** was a headache with all the running back and forth for the necessary tools and wasn't easy for a first timer but I'm into things like this so I feel it was well worth it, ain't a better feeling than wrenching on your own car.. That's on both sides.
built 5.0 teskid block with Arp everything with either 9.3 c/r or 9.8 c/r is going in hopefully before the summer ends, the crank and block are sitting here just waiting. And a toss up between a 2.9 Whipple and a 3.4.
Only thing left that needs to be built up is a fuel system and the trans, thinking about getting the fuel part out the way this summer

I never needed one of those, I have a photographic memory for stuff like that.
I did have to put bolts into separate piles, engine top, trans stuff etc..
TAKE PICTURES lots of them. On more than a few occasions it saved me from disaster
PB blaster lots of it...
