View Full Version : How To Muffle Doors

Evening everyone. I have a conundrum on my hands. All these new vehicles coming out have doors that close so well with a satisfying thump. Compare that to my Grand Marquis and Marauder where their doors sometimes freak me out. its like a clunk sound vs a muffled thump. I figure this could also help with how my friends seem to think its ok to just slam the doors with no care in the world.
Long story short. anyone ever fiddled with their door mechanism? is there anyway to muffle my doors in similar fashion to new doors?
heres a vid for reference to my inquiry.

The quality of today's vehicles are much higher than when our marauders were built, so its never going to be the same. I also think it has nothing to do with the latches. New cars have sound deadening material in the doors to make them sound solid, when in reality the material is most likely thinner than ever.
I hear the difference in the sound, but I really think you are being over critical, remember these cars are structurally the same as police, taxi, and other fleet vehicles where no one gave a ****, so no effort was put into making them sound solid.

Maybe add 10lbs of lead in the door :dunno:

Line the inside door skin and the outside of the interior panel (behind the interior panel) with sound deadening material. That will cut down on the flexing of the thin panels.

Maybe change weatherstripping to some sort of high density foam...when someone slams my door i will repeatedly tell them everytime they get in and out to not slam the door, until they get annoyed and i dont have to tell them anymore :)

Next time it happens, tell them to watch....open their door back up, slowly close it and tell them that it practically closes itself, then have them repeat it....if that doesn't work, tell them if they keep doing it to find their own ride, thats what i do, you might look like a di*k, but i bet they'll remember when they have to find their own transportation.

I like the sound our doors make when closed. I've been in newer ones and shut the door or so I thought, I here the thud from it but the door wasn'tshut all the way. Going way back I like the sound my 79 Mark V door sounds waaaaaay better than anything new...:)

that reminds me of my dads 67 Lincoln. her doors were huge and imposing. Lincoln got it right with those.

New doors are much lighter. The impact force is greatly reduced.

Check your door hinges. These slowly wear away and the door drops causing a misalignment. Open the door and lift, any play the hinges need to be replaced. Better alignment, easier and more secure closure.

This^. Also have to remember the age of the weather seals around the door are 10+ years old now.
When I added Dynamat to my front doors they immediately sounded different since they had some more weight to them.

The doors on our ladies shut perfectly, especially the back since their not used as much, I'd leave them alone. You can tell your friends to stop slamming them but they won't listen :shake: Do what I do, tell them once, they do it again don't say anything, throw it in park, get out, open the door their sitting at, reach in, grab the bastard by the hair, throw him on the ground (or a wall nearby) and get back in and leave him there with no ride and I guarantee that person will never slam your door again, that pisses me off and yes I have left people stranded

Good subject OP
on mine the interior door panels rattle a bit when closing them my old 2005 Taurus sounded more solid by far so check your door panels ..even when i rest my left knee against the door panel it kinda squeaks like some retainers or screws are missing 2002 MGM

Aren't these the same doors that were on the first design back in '92. I don't believe the doors have been changed as the rest of the car has. I'm only guessing, if true it would explain why the doors sound as they do...

I personally went with Dynamat Xtreme, used it when I did car stereo installs for a living. Good thick product that works but it does cost more, I found a good deal on a bulk pack off Amazon. I only did the front doors but it has enough to do all the doors and trunk. Best to do it on a hot summer day, lay the sheets out on the sidewalk or driveway, makes them easier to form and mold and less rolling needed to apply as it can turn into a real workout.

I used KnoKnoise by KnuKonceptz. The stuff i put in my trunk is 100mil thick. I paid about 140 for 35sq ft which to my surprise didnt even fully cover the trunk. They also have a thinner version which is 80mils thicks. The thicker stuff is almost a pound per sheet.
