View Full Version : Elio to replace Marauder?
The new three wheeler Elio is the leading candidate to compliment my Marauder at this time in my life.
The Marauder is a wonderful car when I bought it new in 2004. But my needs and desires have changed. The Elio seems to be a good fit for me, small, cheap, great economy with enough carrying capacity for my bi-monthly trip to the commissary. The unique styling of the vehicle appeals to me in a big way.
They debut next year.
My Marauder is in good shape and I'll get a refresher tune this year. I'll be closely following the Elio, hope it makes production.
I've reserved mine (the $100.00 option). It shall be known as "Paddy's Wagon".

Upon further reflection I think I will get the Elio but KEEP the Marauder. I can use the Elio as my DD and the MM for pleasure.
I think it would be cool to get a WW2 leather flying helmet with goggles to wear since the Elio's aircraft fuselage style lends itself to all kinds aviation personalization.
I'm sending to my $100.00 to reserve my car at the $6800.00 price.

I'm already envisioning how to badge it. The WW2 P-51 Mustang comes to mind. A scripted moniker on the rear panel IE, "Lady Be Good". The American star ensemble on the side and a yellow checkered motif across the nose section along with the production serial number. Silver will be my color choice.
Do a search on images of P-51 and the possibilities are endless.

I agree it will have a decent crash rating. My concern comes down with physics.... F = M * A ... little mass so the acceleration is going to be massive on the person in the car as the Force of impact will be the same.
Anyways 3 year 36,000 mile warranty is the plan of record!

Pretty sure if an 18 wheeler broad sides anything the odds of survival without major damage are rather low.
I am curious to see actual crash tests once they are run. Smart cars seem to not get a bad rap for their size and are super popular around the world. Saw plenty buzzing down the Autobahn while I was in Germany.
I reserve judgement until I see the proof... 5 star rating is very interesting of a statement. BTW this isn't really that small.

I think that's the point of designing cars to be crashworthy. Since the ball didn't break, the hamster absorbed all the energy. Well-designed small cars crush in a controlled way to absorb the energy and not transfer it all to the passengers. Poor hamster. He deserved better.

Paul Elio says the price point won't change... he is adamant about that! IAV (who I work for, Gasoline Vehicle Calibration Team Leader) has had stringent rules on hardware to make sure we can keep price where its at.
I think this is going to be a great product, I plan on getting one for my commuter as well.

there is no where for a smart car to crush for example. when hit by a large vehicle it will tumble, fly, whatever...hence my hamster analogy.
I guess if you enjoy lonely rides and skinny jeans the elio would be the perfect car... I prefer ball room and room for B**ches.
The Elio is right for me because of planned usage, IE: local shopping, banking, eating out and so forth. 100% of my daily business is within eight miles of home with posted 25-45 mph speed limits. So the gas mileage specification of 50 MPG city is a major selling point.
I live in a small city not more than nine miles across at it's widest point. The freeways of LA may not be the place for an Elio.
Secondly, the initial investment of $6800, with little to no financing, lower insurance bill and regular gasoline pricing with unlimited mileage vs battery power cars limited range are also major selling points. I am anticipating little depreciation unlike traditional cars.
The cost of ownership should be easy on my wallet since I live on a fixed income and social security.
88CuttyClassic makes a good point of crash survivability but that's not the pond I'm swimming in.
I think the ads claiming the Elio can go 100 MPH are not realistic. It's a commuter vehicle and should be marketed as such. It's not a vehicle that should see much freeway miles or time, IMO.
Look around, the vast majority of vehicles driving around town have only one occupant. The HOV lanes are nearly empty, always.
It shouldn't have to take a two-three ton car, SUV or a four ton truck to move a 120 lb woman around town to buy a 20 ounce dress.
The planet will thank me.

There was significant response to the question... so its a topic for future model years. Obviously they wouldn't be below the $10k mark I would not think though at that point.
My wife, Patricia, is smitten by the Elio and tried to order/reserve one. But the site said only one per household. Will have to figure out another way.
I've claimed "Paddy's Wagon" as my moniker.

Maybe I need to take a closer look at one of these. Especially since 87 has gone up $0.45 here in the past two months.
Many of us are trying to conserve mileage on our ten year old Marauders, hoping to have them last another ten. The Elio can be an "AND" vehicle. Marauder and an Elio.
There are major financial issues to overcome before or if production begins. Hopefully investors will come forth. It would be a set back to see this neat autocycle die on the vine. What I fear is that the American made model will be supplanted by a Chinese model and sold in Asia by the thousands.
The three cylinder motor by IAV is OBDII controlled and can be retuned to it's HP potential. It is classified as a motorcycle at this point in time. A turbo is a good fit for the Elio if more power is your pleasure.
A portion of the GM truck assembly plant in Shreveport is available to Elio to lease.
I previously reported Elio bought the whole plant. Nope, Caddo Parish commission bought the property and has a California company to manage it.
Regardless, I need to conserve miles on my Marauder but I don't want the initial expense of a small car, it's upkeep, or the higher cost of insurance vis a vis a motorcycle. The Elio with it's $6800 price tag is perfect.

im actually considering buying one of these, i have a 40 mile commute to work which means i fill up the marauder about once a week including driving around on the weekends.
with gas at right at about 4.00 for premium thats about 4g's(19gallons) a year on gas but realistically since i sometime drive my wife's sonota probably about 2500-3000 a year on gas for the marauder
at 3.60 average for 87 octane and the 49/84 mpg rating(with most of my commute being 55mph+) ill say probably about 60 mpg, with an 8 gallon tank thats about 480 miles per fill up at 40 miles a day would last me about 12 work days so once ever 2.5 weeks....
so at 30 bucks to fill up about every 2-2.5 weeks is about 650-750 bucks a year on gas, thats alot of money to save on just gas(1900) but the increased insurance plus whatever financing option i choose might have me in the same financial situation until the elio is paid off

Either a great guardian angel or a naive belief in your fellow driver.
I know of 2 people who were killed in separate MC accidents due to the other drivers errors in the past year. All their helmets did is act as a DNA receptacle.
I rode MC back when people knew how to drive and had control of their vehicle.
Good Luck.
For those who place a premium on fuel economy AND cost of ownership the Elio is a great candidate. Yes, there are cars that can achieve 40 MPG in city driving but they don't cost $6.8K (advertised cost of a basic Elio). KBB has a top 30 list of cars that get 40+MPG. Except for one, @18K, all cost more than 20K.
The downside, as several members in this thread point out, is decreased occupant(s) protection in a crash, after all, the Elio is a very small vehicle. Traditional two wheeled motorcycles offer, IMO, no protection against being hit by a conventional car or truck.
The Elio, however, does have a full wrap around steel frame and enclosed body, features not found on an MC. On their website are videos of safety performance, www.eliomotors.com (http://www.eliomotors.com).
Operating an Elio would, IMO, be on par with the subcompact class of cars.

This is the scheme I like, P-51 Mustang WWII fighter
If I recall correctly if it doesn't have 4 wheels it doesn't have to conform to car safety standards (meaning the Elio would be held to motorcycle rather than car safety standards). There's a few reasons motorcycles don't have seatbelts; one of them is that you actually want the driver if the bike to be separated from the bike, as being fixed to it would cause worse injuries. In an Elio, seatbelts/airbags/etc or not, there's nowhere to go, and there's a lot less space between you and the object applying force to the car in the event of a crash (other car, tree, etc), crumple points or not.
All that being said, considering the environment that an Elio would be used in, I would say that there are less risks. Everyone is traveling at lower speeds, and there probably aren't as many cars on the road.
I'd probably still buy one, though. Just things to consider.

Saw this OTR a week ago. Either OH or PA. Don't recall which. I remembered the thread title here, which I hadn't read at that point. Interesting.
Is it a one seater or two?
