Ouch those pics make me cringe. Any idea what it was? Pretty serious to punch through the rim like that.

Damn .... and a new wheel too !!!
If I had to guess, it looks like you hit a piece of 3 or 4 inch angle iron laying face down /\ to make that "V" cut in the wheel. The other possibility would be the raised point on a steel plate. What does the hole in the tire look like?
You didn't see anything in the road before this happened ??

That happened to me on a dirt bike one time. Scary as hell and ended up being a railroad spike (nail) that I ended up finding inside my inner tube after I took everything apart. Glad your okay!

At work I had a Milan come in with an almost identical hole, by it still had the metal stuck in the tire and hole....turned out to be a flat blade screwdriver with a broken off handle. That was about the strangest thing I've seen in a tire/wheel in a long time..then to see it happen to you at speed nonetheless all I can say is

Did not see anything. The worst part was I was on an elevated highway junction in an industrious area surrounded by 18 wheelers. The back of my car jumped and the CD I was listening to skipped.
I was changing lanes when it happened, I think whatever it was must have been hidden in the the expansion gap between the lanes.
I also had a fiasco with Discount Tire that I think might work out in my favor. Long story short: They stripped a lug, I demand they fix it, mechanic says 3 lugs are stripped, they have to burn the old lugs out, I demand they find me a new OEM wheel. So now I have the wheel I bought to replace the one in the pics, a new wheel coming for they one they "torched off" and the "torched off" wheel which I think I can salvage with some polishing compound.
Man, how I hate other people working on my car.

Does not look like a gun shot based on the gun shot that made a hole in my tire and wheel.

It was on a wet and cold nite down the street from a gun range. I assume someone was putting their gun in their trunk and it went off.
I didn't know that is how I got the flat until the shop where I dropped it off the next day told me they could not fix it, but would not say why. I went out there and they showed me the hole in the tire and wheel.
I brought it to the gun range and they advised no one reported an accidental discharge. They concluded it was a bullet hole.
A friend who owns a machine shop repaired it but it would not hold air. :( The Dealer sold me a new one at cost.:)
