:cool: About 6 months ago I noticed when I started the car for about two seconds it had a noise I can best describe as a echo like a bell or a noise something makes when ball bearings are bad. Disappeared after a day or so and now about 6 months later its back and happens every few days but only for about 2 or 3 seconds at start up first thing in the morning. Rest of the day car is fine. I'm trying to figure out if its maybe the alternator or a belt that's a bit loose or something else. Anybody have any ideas ? By the way just turned 200 K on my 2004 Marauder and still runs great with no major repairs since I owned it except windshield wiper motor replacement. All routine maintenance. What a car !

Could be chain rattle, have you had the chain tensioners/arms/guides ever replaced?
My motor has 214k miles on it and did chain rattle only after sitting for a few days the past several years then developed a tick sound several months ago once the motor got warm and oil thinned out.

It is timing chain rattle before the tesioners "pressure up"....won't hurt anything but sounds like a BIG PROBLEM!!
I think you can get replacement tensioners with a ratchet device in them that keeps them from leaking down over time??
Mine has done it off and on but lately there has been no rattling......weird!!:shake:
BTW....you will hear the same racket when you start it after an oil and filter change...sounds bad but apparently causes no damage??

The stock plastic tensioners do not have a ratchet device that will keep pressure applied against the guides and slack out of the timing chains when the car is off and especially if it has sat for a few days. First link will show another member's plastic tensioners, one of the seals were broken so that would allow oil to seep out when the car was turn off.

So it's not bad to have it like that for now till I fix it 5 to 6 months from now it won't brake the chain because I run my car on the highway a lot

As long as it gets quiet in a second or two after start-up I think you will be OK!!
When it continues to rattle....trouble is brewing!!

Mine does the same - sometimes for a few seconds sometimes for longer - seems to depend on how long it sits and the temperature.

Do you all have a motorcraft FL820S oil filter installed, every morning on start up I had this, makes a difference. With this filter, none on start up. There is a check valve in it to keep oil on the top side, so I have been told. Worked for me, worth a try, cheap fix.
