View Full Version : Time for a new ignition?

At 225,000 miles I was wondering if I need to change my ignition switch. I was watching Top Gear U.K. and they proved you could steal an 80s BMW very easily because of years of the key going in and out of the ignition. Almost anything could turn the ignition.... the ignition was very worn out.
I know we have micro chips, but I am still paranoid. Should I change this from years of the key going in and out? Do I have anything to worry about?
Thanks!

I don't think you would have to worry about it,
Someone tried to steal my MM by breaking the switch off & failed cus it wouldn't start with out the Key.
When the body shop replaced the switch they had to go through Ford.

A key wears out a whole lot faster than the key tumbler. Look at your current key vs a key you may not use often or not at all and you can see the wear.
Just an example

Dom, your car is not a General Motors product. It does not need a new ignition switch.

That's funny. My 89 Silverado you could start it and pull the key right out of the ignition. Most GM ignitions with the rectangle head key would do it. I am sure someone else on here has had a car in the past that did it.
