View Full Version : Marauder won't start.

So I stored my marauder in my garage over the winter. I bought a new battery for it and the plan was to start it once a week. Well, after the first week, the car didn't start. I ignored the problem for the rest of fall and all of winter until a few days ago when I bought yet another battery for it. Turns out the first new battery died because I had a live wire connected to it from when I used to have a sound system. Anyways, new battery goes in but the car wont start. The engine turns it just wont start. I put five gallons of fresh fuel in it and it still won't start. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

hey Mest, haven't seen you in ages. I'd try some starting fluid and spray it right into the throttle body, then see if she fires. May be fuel delivery problem, also see the trunk fuel reset switch.

Check the reset switch in the trunk. See if there is fuel pressure at the schrader valve in the fuel rail.

Yes check the trunk switch. Or at least play with it.

Check your fuel pump relay in the circuit box under the hood and check fuel rail to see if it is pressurized

Sounds like the pesky fuel pump.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I'll play with the switch in the trunk. Where in the trunk is it located? To those saying to see if the fuel line has pressure, how do I check that?
Babbage, yeah, not been on the forums in a long while. Two kids and two jobs have really cut into play time.

Switch is in the far right front of the trunk, attached to the support. You'll see a red button in a hole in the trunk liner.
Find the schrader valve on the fuel rail (I think it's on the passenger side), looks like a tire valve. Put a rag or towel around it and depress the valve. If gas comes out you have fuel to the injectors.

Schrader valve? Fuel rail? Looks like a tire valve? Lets pretend you were talking to a five year old. How would you explain it to him/her?

Fuel rail is the shiny chrome tube that runs between the cam covers and the intake manifold. The fuel injectors are connected to it.
Have you ever filled tires with air? The schrader valve is the valve used to fill tires with air.... in this case it used to test fuel pressure.

Class in in session.......
This is the schrader valve. It's on the left (drivers side) front of the engine (I incorrectly said it was on the right side). Remember to put a rag or towel around it. I can not be responsible if you get gas in your eye....

This is what the fuel pump shutoff looks like.

Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but turn the key to the 'on' position (not 'start') and see if you hear the fuel pump kick on...

Messing with the switch in the trunk did nothing. I located the valve thanks to the pic but can't press it. It had a plastic cover on the right side of it (right if facing the front of the car). I took it off and tried pressing it, squeezing it, etc. I don't know if I did it wrong but I got nothing. No gas. No air. Nothing.

When doing that I hear a very slight whining noise seemingly coming from the middle of the engine.

After all that I would check fuse #5 20 (amp little fuse) and 105 (30 amp rectangular fuse) under the hood in the relay/fuse box located behind the battery before I start digging deeper

Leave key in on position and press the Schrader valve to see if the fuel rail now has pressure...be careful of spray

Don't have to mess with anything..... just make sure the red button is depressed.
You need to unscrew the cap on the schrader valve to get to the valve itself.

Is there gas in the tank????

So the key has to be on when checking the valve? I'm colorblind (legit) and did not see a red button on the valve. Yes there is gas in the tank.

Maybe I missed it. It was kind of dark. Ill check again tomorrow. I tried checking the valve again with the key in the on position. Still nothing. Unless I'm blind, there is no button to press.

I misunderstood. I thought the red button you were referring to was on the valve not the switch. The switch is fine. Not getting anything out of the valve. Sorry for the confusion.

Sounds like a dead fuel pump......check relays and fuses again before diving into the FP swap!!

When doing that I hear a very slight whining noise seemingly coming from the middle of the engine. If you hear nothing from the back of the car, I would suspect a dead fuel pump (or at least no power getting to the fuel pump).
Go beat the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet and see if that brings the fuel pump to life.

Where you able to depress the valve?

My comments on this thread:
I know this is a very old thread, but I'm glad i found it.
My situation was a little different though. My battery died and I replaced the battery and the fuel pump wasn't kicking on. I checked the switch in the trunk, fuses, and relay. All good. So then I contemplated jumping the wires on the module as Phrog suggested. But first I unplugged the module. Turned the key just to trigger the fuel pump. Turned the key off. Plugged the module back up. Turned the key again and BOOM!!! Fuel pump kicked back on. Cranked the car and it fired right up. I did have a code related to the fuel module not responding. I cleared the code and took her for about a 5 mile spin and no issues.
Not sure if this is an indication that somthing is failing or what. All I know is it works for now. Thanks for this thread.

Where you able to depress the valve?
No. I tried pressing in the part that is underneath the plastic cap that twists off and got nothing. Is there a certain technique to do it?

No. Try starting the car then depress the valve. If the fuel pump is OK you will have gas squirt out of the valve.

I just tried was about to do that. Gave my wife they key and told her to try starting it while I mess with the valve. She turned the key and it started right up. I tried mot three minutes before and it didn't start. So what now? Leave it on? Turn it off and try again?

Definitely not. They were in there tight and hard to get out.

Modern gas causes oxidation in the contacts inside the pump and fuel gauge sending unit inside the tank. Chevron Techron has an additive that helps clean away some of the oxidation. With the car not running for a while, I'll bet the contacts got some oxidation on them. I had one that was only driven a couple times a month that started doing your symtoms. After several key turns and trying to start it with no fuel pump noise, then heard the pump come on. I add a bottle of Techron every 5th or 6th tank on all my cars now.

Thanks everybody for all the tips and help. I know I'm not very active on this board but its nice being able to post problems and to get immediate responses.

I don't think it's the actual radio itself. I think it's a fuse or wiring I just have never taken the time to take a look.
