The background story:

I put Flowmaster Delta 50's on my 'Rauder with factory manifolds, cats, etc and the sound was darn near perfect. Last summer, I switched to stainless works long tubes and their high flow cats and its wayyyyy too loud for my liking. I'm doing an Eaton swap soon so my assumption is that the exhaust sound will only get louder. Bottom line, I'm looking for a much quieter set of mufflers since I'd still like to retain the luxury part of the Marauder.

My friend has a stock S55 Mercedes and the exterior exhaust note makes the hair on your neck stand up, all while maintaining extremely minimal noise levels both interior and exterior. I know this is an apples to oranges comparison but its a place where Id like to start.

My question is, how well do the factory mufflers themselves flow? I know the inlet and outlets are extremely restrictive. If cut out the 1.XX" inlet and outlets and weld on pieces of 2.25 and 2.5" tubing, will this gain me anything or is the interior of the muffler restrictive as well?

I know I'm gonna have a ported blower, long tubes, high flow cats, and non-stock mufflers so quite luxury might be a pipe dream but I cant be the first person to want this.

Thanks everyone!

Factory mufflers are just fine for what your planning. I had the same muffs and set up as you plus the rear cats removed. Sounded really good, until I put headers on and an X pipe on.. It wasn't even a week I ripped them Flowmaster 50's off! I went with Magnaflows and ZERO raspy sounds, just a nice deep growl. Perfect combo in my book.

+ 100000 on the Magna flows! My fox body had the nasty flowmaster drone and the Magna Flows eliminated it!

Yep. Larger muffler will help break down more sound waves. Don't get the 14" Magnaflow. If the Magnaflows aren't enough tone down then you could add some resonators in-line before the mufflers to help chop down the sound.

Magnaflow also has a resonator x pipe that several members used to tone the noise down even more.
I have the LT's and 18" magnaflows and they work for me, not too loud until I mash the skinny pedal.

it definitely quiets it down. inside the car it is so quiet and all you here is a smooth, deep sound. i haven't put on the Longtubes yet but it will probably make it slightly louder.

Borlas Pro XS! As quiet as stock at idle and low RPMs, much better flow than stock and deep sound under acceleration.

That's the most convincing story Ive heard yet. I borrowed a friends Audi A8L a while back and got addicted to the ultra-fast, ultra-quiet car type. I drive around a lot and frankly I think Im just growing up and starting to not like everything loud. Still, nothing beats the sound of a straight-piped cobra at the track!

I understand. I am considering deleting the rear cats for flow reasons, but don't want a much louder exhaust. I may change my after market tips (res delete) back to stock. I like the classy combination I get from my Borla mufflers, nice and quiet when you want it to be and a nice tone under acceleration.

I run 14" magnaflow's and they sound excellent. Not to loud at all. I typically use my car for business hauling clients around and I've always had complements on the smooth tone the car has.

With magna flo XL's - The Streight thru Magna flo's will give U the same problem as the Delta 50's with the Xpipe. [ I paid Twice with the combinations.]:mad2:
