View Full Version : Alternator not working after Eaton Swap

I'm puzzled. I triple checked the wiring, it's fine.
Battery voltage is making it to the alternator via the harness.
Took it off and put it on my car and it works fine.

Has anyone ever had their alternator not function when rotation is reversed?

I will swap mine on his later, because that one worked on an eaton car.

So puzzled

You really find this odd?

50% or more of Eaton/Trilogy Roots style blower installs see the alternators fail after living their life being spun one way and then having their world flipped around and spun the other way.

Go get yourself a new alternator and report back with the positive results.

Just sayin'.

I do find it odd.
Because It has never happened to me and to give up the ghost immediately is strange.
Especially with only 19k on the clock.

We have seen a countless number fail - sometimes they wait until they get on the dyno but they do not like seeing their whirled turned. LOL

Seriously, do you have a "spare" alternator that you can toss in and try?

Mine puked by Marty's MVXI only a few thousand miles after being flipped for T242 install. Only 45k on it.

They don't like changing direction after getting used to going the other way... :shake:

Mine never charged right from birth till I installed my Trilogy! It worked flawlessly for 50,000 miles after that and I finally retired it last year for no real reason along with a new starter when I did my Cobra block.

So what you are saying is, if Zack wants his junk back he needs to get it out of your trunk?

Interesting.

Went to work 2 hours late this morning so I could take this thing to the alternator shop.

I asked them to test it in both directions, but they only needed to test it in one.

When hooked up, it makes proper voltage.
When a load is applied, it flatlined.

Should be fixed by 4.

He was in his man cave, that doesn't constitute work.

He should thank me for freeing up his time so he could play with his own car :D

Update:

I had the alternator rebuilt.
Put it on and it seemed ok. Then I revved it up and it spiked to 18 volts and it made all of the dash lights illuminate.
So then I removed it and put it on my car....worked fine going forward, but made a weird noise on both cars.. So its going back.
I put my alternator on his car and it worked fine, but only made 12.5 volts. On my car going forward it makes 13.6. So much wtf.

Buy a new alternator and be done with the frustration. It is only money!

I had to leave work to take this back to the shop.
They put it on their tester in both directions and couldn't duplicate the problem.

They agreed to install a new regulator, which of course may have to be ordered.

Wasn't it started days ago the solution is to buy a new alternator? One that has not been used ever?

Someone quote me so Mr. Fabulous can read.

What component actually goes bad? Im doing my Eaton swap soon and this thread has me worried.

I guess the brushes get used to spinning one way, and don't like being reversed all of a sudden. In my case, seems the voltage regulator went haywire after reversing.

The brushes absolutely get used to spinning one direction. They often aren't "brushes" at all. They're a stick of metal that is pushed into the spinning shaft by a spring. Thus the stick wears at the end into a curve biased in the direction of rotation. Start spinning the shaft in the opposite direction and the stick gets pushed toward the other side of the shaft and is prone to poor contact with the shaft, and or premature failure of the "brush".

How long are these brushes expected to last in normal operation. 230K miles; never touched.

Id like to know the solution he found as well. I had a problem extremely similar on a 98 cobra recently after an engine rebuild. After trying 100 different things including running new ground wires to the block, alternator, and frame. I found it to be an alternator case to engine block problem. No idea how or why after adding additional grounds from the alternator case directly to the battery it still wouldn't charge. Cleaned the locations where the alternator case sits against the block and it was good as new.

The problem in this case was a bad ground due to custom coated brackets used for the swap. Good luck.
