View Full Version : Red/Orange Coolant?
1 BAD 03 MM

I just had my driver side cylinder head replaced. All's running well, no tick. I did notice though, that the coolant in the resevior is red. I thought I remember reading something about this not being the right coolant for an all aluminum engine. Unless it's a new spec from Ford?
All I have seen is the Gold, which was in it b4 the head swap, and the green. Did they screw this up? I hope not cause they sure kicked butt getting my car back to me in 12 hours of shop time.

1 BAD:
I'm gonna go WAY out on a limb and say that this may be due to a dye that is put in the coolant and is used for leak testing...I doubt a Ford dealer would stock any coolant that was not acceptable.
Its fine.
They are using the Prestone DexCool Antifreeze.
Mine is red with no problems.
Looks cool if you ask me.
Maybe I need to flush and get the red...it'd match my valve covers...

I thought DexCool was for GM (General Motors, not Grand Marquis) use only...?! Why would a Ford dealer be using DexCool instead of Motorcraft Premium Gold as their ELC?

I heard somewhere that DexCool has had problems so I went to Auto Zone and got the gold stuff that my MM came with??
May not cause problems but if it does it will be too late 2 years from now??
Better safe.....than sorry!!!

Here's what Ford says about coolant. The orange coolant sold by Ford dealers is designed for 99-02 Cougars and Electric Rangers. I quote from the 04 chemical/lubricant book, "do not use this product in systems originally equipped with any green colored or with the yellow colored coolant. The yellow coolant is what all crown vic/grand marquis/marauder use with production dates after 7/15/02. The green coolant is used on vehicles built prior to this date.
I would check back with the dealer to see if it is a dye or if they accidentally
used the dexcool type coolant.
