View Full Version : Paint for valve covers

tbone

Is 500 degree paint good enough for painting the valve covers? 2000 better, more durable?
Any prep tips?
I might powdercoat if funds allow.

I'd powdercoat.

What did you guys pay to powdercoat?

sflrainmaker01

Definitely powder coat! My kids talked me into powder coating the intake and valve covers on my new 86 Mustang Gt 5.0 motor. Man, it came out great! So many color options, too. I believe it was like $220 for the intake and both valve covers. IIRC, it was like $50 for each valve cover, if that helps.

Wow, way cheaper than I thought!!!! Thanks!

Valve covers for a marauder are more..not $50..I think around $200-$250

tbone
05-05-2014, 08:53 PM
That might be hard to afford. Every day $50-100 seems to float out of my wallet buying odds and ends for the project. I'm officially starting the teardown 1 week from tomorrow.

prices may vary , in different areas. but I just had a set done at Mo's speed shop and I didn;t ask for actual cost, he told me he thought it was $200 -$225 I'm thinking..They were just returned Sat. and he sent me a pic. My Trilogy car I bought is down there and I had a set of covers here and sent to him to chnge out. I'll have a set of black powder coated ones for sale after they change them out to the ford racing blue i did. but they will be worth $200 or more easily since they are harder to come it seems by and are already powder coated.

I have a bead blast cabinet so I prepped my own parts which made it pretty cheap.

The covers have to be undressed, blasted, and then thoroughly washed to rid them of sand from teh sand blasting phase, al of which takes time and costs money.

If you have the intake and lower etc. all taken off, do you still have to jack up the engine to get the valve cover on the passenger side off?

Marty, would it be cheaper in a group. I have a set of cam covers just sitting around I was wanting to get coated. Ford wrinkle blue. I under stand the biggest expense is getting the powder.

IIRC no. But even if you did, that only takes 30 secs on your back with an air gun, short extension, and a deep 18MM socket. It can't get any easier than a MM to lift an engine. Great design.

You do need to raise the right side on the engine. You can grind some of the boss inside the cover to make future removal easier.

Just found out GM is screwing me out of $1200 in bonus money because I switched to a Chevy dealership from Buick/GMC. So now money for powdercoating is out of the project. Aholes.

Therefore my original question remains: Is 500 degree paint ok, or should I go for the 2000 degree?

I used the VHT 650* ceramic paint with their primer under and then put a couple coats of gloss over it, then I baked the parts for 2 hours @ 200*. I think it's a good coating for the money. Powdercoating will always be the most durable. If you do this yourself just be sure and degrease the inside of your covers at a car wash with some degreaser and high pressure wash so as to not mess up mommas oven. The down side will be the limited number of colors vs what you can get with powdercoating. I figure if it doesn't hold up then I'll pull them and have them powdercoated. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/mu2ubeze.jpg

Found my pics of the rattle can wrinkle black. I still can't get over how thick this set up and how it's almost impossible to scratch. Of course, throwing them in my blast cabinet prior ensured a damn good prep.

Going in to bake:

That's an amazing price! The whole reason for me never once having something PC'd is price! Every local place around me wants $350 for just the cam covers!! I got a price to do the lower manifold and timing cover too.. $350!!! WTF?! Keep in mind that I was willing to do my own prep in my blast cabinet. Same price.

I realize even just an hour drive away I can get it done for probably a third of that, but now that's two hours wasted I could have been paid working.. Or I have to pay shipping. Too discouraging to say the least, so out with the rattle cans. I don't make good money just to pay other people great money, on top of that doing all the prep and clean up.

Maybe it's time to invest in a small side venture. Hmmm.

My timing cover is already powdercoated black so left it on. i just wanted to brighten it up alittle and I had these spare covers for a couple years now

I've been considering wrinkle blue valve covers to go with my Alumniator short block. I saw these VHT rattle cans in ebay. I know powder coating would be better, but at this stage I am more into performance than looks. I am thinking I'll take the covers to a shop for blasting for a good prep and I'll bake them at home. Not sure yet of what to do with the '03 COP covers (InTech)

With powdercoating being made more available all over the country, there is no reason to not do it.....last longer and looks better

check out my thread I posted a while back about COP covers, there is a guy who I bought a set from and had him do 2 more sets that I sold. Good quality and cheap prices!
