Motor is in and I've been over everything 2 or 3 times checking connections and making sure everything was tight. Any tips for this first timer would be appreciated. Ive looked over the Reische burping procedure. Any tips on priming the oil system or pulling the plugs and squirting some oil in the cylinders etc ?

Turn the key to on and off about 4 or five times until you hear the fuel pump noise change. This will charge up the pressure in the fuel injection system. Sometimes when started after the fuel system has been opened the engine may stumble and it may throw a check engine light for low fuel pressure.

Brace yourself for noisy lifters. As they pump up they'll settle down. Take a few Tums before you crank it.

Just turn the key and go.

Seems like I read somewhere to crank it with the fuel injectors unplugged several times and then hook them up

You can hold the pedal to the floor and it will turn the ejectors "off"

It will take 60 solid seconds of cranking to build oil pressure.
Just start it up, you'll be fine

Zack and Marty and Jeff at MO's (not a member here) know pretty much everything on these cars..I've never met Zack but he sure comes to mention numerous times. Go with their advice. Wish I lived in GA or back in Milwaukee..

You can make an oil priming device from a garden sprayer. But trust me you'll be fine just starting it up.

I agree which is why I warned him about the lifters - for teh uninitiated it can lead to tense moments listening to them clak-a-lacka!

Fixed it for ya, BUT, that is the truth! Not that it may make any difference, but, I would crank the engine a few times (one, primes the fuel system and second get some of the oil flowing before it actually starts). I also fill up the oil filter with oil. It just makes ME feel better without having to take Tums, lol!

In my day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and cars had mechanical fuel pumps, you would have been correct... ;)

I use the garden sprayer, no complaints at all no noise either.
With the pushrod motors we used to prime through the distributor with a power drill.
It is not 100% necessary though but it does help IMHO. Tons of people do without and are totally fine. Post up a vid when you get it running.

:DNot worried about a little loud Chatter !, I've been married 33 years !! I"ll start it up Wednesday, tomorrow is a busy one. I figured Zack would give me a brief "Crank It Up" comment, I Trust his Judgement and experience . I'm not worried about the motor starting up:flamer:,:bigcry: All I would be out is my time and a slightly used Short block,:o I like JustBobs sig,,Buy it, Break it, Build it Better:beer:. I"ll Make a Vid Wednesday, Loud and Noisy then purring or Loud andNoisy then Boom.!!

Right, but, cranking also gets the oil pump pumping at less RPM than the engine running. Like I said, it makes ME feel better!

"She is Alive",,,not a bit of noise !?! I gave her several clicks to on and I heard the fuel pump, so then I held her WOT for several runs to get some oil pressure, not a sound ! Then I cranked it with my foot off the pedal and it didn't start , tried several more attempts and nothing. Then on about the fifth attempt I could tell the fuel pressure was not there so I throttled it a little with the pedal and she stuck her head up and cleared her throat. A little more foot action and I could take my foot off the pedal. She was running on her own and quiet as a mouse. Stopped her, let it sit awhile and topped off the oil. Then started her back up and let it run about 4or5 minutes with the heat on high and the funnel in the cot. I don't think the t-stat ever opened and the antifreeze in the funnel didn't recede after I shut it off so I went ahead and pulled the funnel out and put the plug in snug. I'll let it cool down tonight and run several cycles tomorrow. I would of thought the t-stat would of opened up after 5 minutes ??

The Tstat can take up to 15 minutes to open just idling from a cold start

To get the t-stat to open quicker rev it up to 1500-2000. These motors take a long time to warm up fully.

The fuel system seems to airlock quite easily. It is hard to start the first time after getting it back together. When we did mine we started wondering if we had a kink or a fuel pump issue or something - it was just airlock to the rails.

Did a heat cycle this morning and let it set for an hour, then pulled the plug and topped it off several times while I worked outside. I still didn't notice the coolant being sucked into the Cot after turning it off, as the Reiche instructions said. Then after about three hours I topped it off and took it for a 5 minute spin and brought it back in and parked it. As I was shutting it off I noticed the check engine light on so I pulled the codes, P1000, P1170 and P 1290. Also I am still having to feather the throttle to start it, I'm thinking that there still is some air in the fuel system.
