I've got a small oil leak near the oil filter. It's hard to tell, but it looks like there is a plate where the oil filter threads onto? So I assume there is a gasket behind that plate? Has anyone else had a leak in this area? Thanks, Curt

I see Motorcraft lists a Engine Oil Filter Adapter Gasket.

Has anyone replaced this?

I have replaced it. Its not too bad of a job, you will need to disconnect a cooler line if i recall, so dont do it while the engine is hot. Problem fixed. I got the gasket from a flaps. I read a old post somewhere that said you could just tighten down the bolts that hold it on, however, unless they are loose, it wont make a difference because the gasket you will replace is actually a plastic mold with a rubber seal integrated in it. You cant mash that plastic enough to help the rubber seal work again.

Thanks for the help.

There have been a few members that have had 2 gaskets installed from the factory causing a leak.

I replaced at about 100K. Started out a small leak like you mentioned, but quickly became larger. New gasket and no problems.

I had to replace that also. It seams to be common.

So I picked up a new gasket from Ford and the parts guy mentioned I'll also need to drain the radiator because the main coolant line passes though this area also? Large opening. Oil goes through the two small openings.

All true, did this about 2 months ago. Make sure you follow refilling the coolant and burping procedures, getting the air out of the cooling system can be a pain.

One of the jobs I hate the most... Not hard, just super messy.

Very common indeed.

Sorry. My bad. When I saw this "you will need to disconnect a cooler line if i recall" I was thinking engine oil cooler, not engine coolant.

Changed the gasket on Saturday morning. What a PITA. I drained the radiator and after all four bolts were loose, it was like Niagara Falls. Anti-freeze everywhere. Guess I should have removed the lower hose to drain the block.

Yes. No more oil drops on the garage floor.

One thing that concerns me is what if you had a major failure of that gasket? From my image from post #9, the two small holes are the oil passages to and from the oil filter and the large hole is for engine coolant. You could potentially pump anti-freeze into the oil.

Sounds like this is rather rare.

At first I thought it was my oil sender leaking, so I bought a new one. When the oil continued to leak, I looked into it further and discovered it was this gasket. I looked at the old gasket on Saturday but couldn't see where oil was leaking. I'll look closer tonight.

Wrong. Every MM that's been in my garage leaked. Very very common.

And yes, it does suck doing it.
