View Full Version : Changing Steering Wheel

Later today I intend to change steering wheels. Both are OEM. One is in better condition than the other. This seems pretty straight forward, but don't want to take chances with my DD so I figured it is best to check with the crew here before I do this. More specifically, I want to make sure to avoid steering wheel/tire alignment issues and airbag warning light issues.

I'll disconnect the battery and let the car sit still for a few minutes for airbag safety reasons.
Make sure the tires are straight and key is in the off position.
Remove the two bolts that hold the air bag
Pull air bag out and disconnect the airbag wiring
Loosen up the steering wheel bolt and back it out almost all the way
Remove steering wheel (no steering wheel puller needed). I did this on my wrecked MM by pulling on the sides of the wheel itself...
Install replacement steerign wheel and bolt.
Reconnect airbag wiring for replacement airbag
Fasten replacement airbag
Re-connect battery
Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

If you do not care about your old steering wheel, you can hit it with a hammer to get it off... if you are having difficulty with removal and lack the proper tool.

You can turn the headlight switch on and it will drain everything almost immediately.
No need to wait.

If you do not care about your old steering wheel, you can hit it with a hammer to get it off... if you are having difficulty with removal and lack the proper tool. Not exactly the best idea...you risk damaging the clockspring. Not to say a few taps will hurt anything, but generally hammering on the steering wheel is not advised.

Removing the steering wheel is actually fairly easy without the removal tool and without a hammer. One quick pull on the top side of the steering wheel, then on the bottom, then one the right side and then the left side. Repeat.

Junkyards are fun

Haha! ...not realizing this was about draining POWER, I at first thought this was some obscure "blinker fluid" type post, and laughed.

Success! It was easy. No hammers involved. Most importantly there are no post installation issues.

Thanks guys.
