Use whatever oil makes you feel warm and fuzzy. There is no such thing as "the best" oil. Just stick with 5W-20 or 5W-30 and use Motorcraft filters. (Yes, FL820S is correct) Changing at less than 5,000 is a waste of oil that buys you nothing.

I'm using 0w30 Mobile 1 & Motorcraft filter.

Get an oil analysis done. Will tell you what the condition of the engine internals are like.

I just used the new penzoil platinum. Seems like good stuff. Ive always changed at 3000 miles with motorcraft synthetic blend, but i think im going to give it 5000 miles this go around.

Try it but wait till you see the oil and oxidation on visible components you wont do it again

buying full synthetic fluid and changing every 3K is a complete waste of money, if your going to change it that often then buy the cheap **** and save yourself some money

Wow look at all that oxidation behind the timing cover, wonder what another 214k miles will make it look like.

5W20 summer or winter don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Motorcraft is reasonably priced but what ever top brand you prefer will work.

5W20 vs 5W30 which one is thicker? ( that's the only difference, right?)
And part 2: why one specifically over the other?

Thanks!

Indeed. I have used AMSOIL, Royal Purple and currently using Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage. Have been using a FULL synthetic oil since 40k miles and always changed at 5k miles. ALWAYS use a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter.

The first number, 5, indicates the lowest operational cold temperature range, while the second, 20, signifies the highest operational temperature range. Oils will have a different viscosity at different temperatures.

Ford recommends Motorcraft Syn-Blend 5W-20 with an oil change interval of every 6 months or 5k miles. The key is using a quality oil and changing the oil when you are required. Asking what brand to use why one is better than the other has been talked about so many times. AMSOIL and Royal Purple are consider two of the top high performance oils on the market. Mobil 1 is recommend by GM and Mercedes Benz. Either three or Motorcraft will suit your needs. The high performance ones do cost more $7-12 a quart depending on where you shop. I use M1 as it's middle of the road and can get it at any Walmart.

Whitey go for it 5k+ intervals all the way

5-30 is what the engine was designed to use. The switched the recommendation to 5-20 to improve their CAFE standards. Somewhere on here is a thread with a Ford powertrain engineer that states that and the fact that he would never run 5-20 in his vehicles because he has seen the difference in protection and the resulting wear vs it and 5-30 when they were testing to see which engines could get by with 5-20.

Are you saying that Pennzoil platinum is bad or oil changes every 5k miles?

RF Overlord

Try it but wait till you see the oil and oxidation on visible components you wont do it again I'm not sure where you're getting this, but any conventional oil, used in an engine in sound mechanical condition, is good for 5,000 miles...synthetic is good for for 10,000 and in many cases more.
Are you saying that Pennzoil platinum is bad or oil changes every 5k miles?Pennzoil Platinum is a superb oil that's good for WAY more than 5,000 miles. You made a good choice.

dont even list to this guy me and roger got into an argument on another thread about oil and motown even had an analysis report that told him his oil was still good but he was rambling on about contaminants,:puke:

your oil is fine, i would change it at 5K just because you can

amsoil says that there oil+filter is good up to 25K in normal service and 15K in severe service! but if your not a "upgraded" member its about 9 something a quart!
