I remember someone telling me i should have a third key on hand to program if i lose one of first two i have. I was browsing ebay and found a few uncut keys for sale as seen here
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-OEM-03-04-05-Mercury-Marauder-or-05-06-07-Mariner-transponder-chip-key-/261491021811?pt=Motors_Car_Tru ck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AMercury%7CModel%3A Grand%20Marquis&hash=item3ce21457f3&vxp=mtr&_uhb=1

price is good but shipping seems quite high for something this small. would it really cost over 20 bucks to send this to canada?

You can't buy one locally? I got mine at a local locksmith.

Probably not $20.00, $10.00 would be more like it

I bought one last week at Part Source programmed to start car for $60, took 2 mins. If you have Canadian Tire stores in B.C. you must have a Part Source.

Has anybody tried a Ford Fusion key with the buttons built in yet? On the F150 forums they've been doing this for awhile on the '04-'08's. I've been thinking about trying it out in the MM

If they programed the key and not your car your car does not think it has 3 unique keys programmed only 2. If you loose the key that they didn't clone you will not be able to program another standard key yourself.

If you do loose that key that was not cloned to get another key you'll be stuck overpaying again for another cloned key or going to a shop to have it programed.

From my understanding the key will start the car but the remote portion will not work since they use the later style remote and our cars use the early style remote.

Those keys for the f150 are 80 bit keys, our cars use a 40 bit key iirc, plus the f150 is a touch over $100 my cost.

Wal-Mart has the ability to program keys, however, when I went to my local WM to have it done, they had the incorrect key blanks for our car. The blanks they have are a good quarter-inch longer than ours. No dice.

Buyer beware.

Some of the dealers stopped carrying the keys with the emblem and went with the generic black PATS keys. Seems people did not want to pay the extra cost for an emblem key.

I see them on Ebay all the time and have bought some Mercury logo ones. I have the dealer (or a locksmith) cut them and then if you have 2 good keys you can do a third. I always have 3 programmed keys so if/when I lose one, I can have another one cut and use the remaining 2 keys to program the new one.

Mine came from eBay. $15 minimum to get anything over the border no matter what size and weight. Don't let the $20 shipping deter you. It's the price of living in winter wonderland.

I only had one set of keys, the original, They said it doesn't matter if I lose the original key in the future. I can bring back the cloned and it will still cost me the same price.

Just in case any one wanted to know they used an F150 key looks nicer than the original and the black piece thing is a bit beefer.

I just got a new 3rd key at the dealer - it was $21.00 - I did because I took delivery of this 04 it had two keys - an original and a 'valet' key.

Well you know in order to program you need two keys. I was worried it wouldn't work.

I was worried that it wouldn't work with the valet key. but it did -

I put the first key in cycled it (w/out starting the car)
quickly did the same with the 'valet key
then quickly did the same with the new spare - and whammo - it worked.

but, what I wanted to tell you was I- got it at the dealer - I know you think $21.00 is a lot. if I bought it on line they would get you on shipping. and I really don't like it when I buy something on line with absorbed shipping cost. I wont buy it. It's theft if you ask me. and plus, I like OEM - I know, I know. but I do...

I once had a COBRA decked out with FORD racing 'stuff' and man it was cool.

Yes they can clone a clone but you can't program a 3rd key with an original and a clone of that same key. Plus you pay more for a programmable key than you do for an original key let alone an aftermarket one.

Are you saying that if I make a 3rd key myself following the procedure in the owner's manual, then lose one of the originals, I won't be able to make another key with the remaining original and my self-made 3rd key?

No I'm saying that you can because your car is programmed to accept 3 unique keys. As long as you have 2 of the unique keys that the computer "knows" you can always program a replacement key.

What I'm talking about are the clone keys sold at hardware stores and some locksmiths. Those keys are programed to give off of the key you present to them to have copied. When using a clone key the computer in the car is not programed to accept the new key it thinks it is one that it was cloned from. So if you have one original and a clone you can not add a third. If you have two originals and a clone and you loose the original that wasn't the one the clone was made from you wouldn't be able to program a 3rd key. In both cases the computer would see the clone key as just being the original one inserted twice in a row.

BTW was that your car I saw in Hyannis on Father's day? I was there for a conference and had a couple of minutes to catch the last of the car show.

Thanks for the clarification.

If it was an SB, it was Mary's car...especially it it was parked next to a Kenny Brown Shelby. I wasn't there, but there are several other JPBs on the Cape including one member here...

...and you were on the Cape and didn't tell me you were coming????? I would have been honoured to buy you a cuppa...
