This is my first car with an automatic transmission so I'm not really sure how O/D works. Just wanted to make sure before I blow my engine up. I've been driving around with it off, but is it safe to be turning it on and off while your driving? for example getting over 50mph and turning o/d on. then slowing down and turning it off

You can turn it on and off while driving, no problemos.
Before you go WOT, it's best to turn it off as I've heard it's bad.
I'm sure others will chime in on this with further detail.

No issues turning od on and off while driving. Od doesn't like hard acceleration, it doesn't hold a lot of power. The reason for turning it off before flooring it is the transmission doesn't like 4-2 downshifting. I killed a transmission doing that once on a dyno.
Also, it's best not to use manual 1 or 2 in everyday driving. It partially applies od to help with engine braking, but if used for acceleration it will wear out od.

What is this turning off OD thingy? :D
Oh yeah, I remember that!
Leaving it on does absolutely ZERO it, unless you are WOT from 3-4 (if mostly stock I'm quite sure you'll be just fine..) or going for a 4-2 downshift. If just a pull from zero to a hundo, you'll never even see it kick into OD as it's just shifting into 3rd at 95 or so..

What they said^^^ i had to get my tranny rebuilt at 107k miles, pretty much stock car. The issue is from 4th(od) downshifting into 2nd gear, example: cruising at 55mph and smashing the pedal. The other issue is shifting into 4th gear at WOT, but like bob said, from a stop to over a 100mph, 4th gear isnt even used yet, i dont know exactly the speed it will shift into 4th gear, but your usually slowing down by then anyway, such as at a drag strip.

With 4.30's and 26" drag radials I was hitting OD right before the traps. The last time I went out with an automatic, I pushed her right on into OD hot lapping three runs at 12.1. LOL I already knew I was going manual so no poopies given. :)
All was fine. Keep in mind it was my stock trans still and many 4-2's over the years by accident. Still shifted great when removed at 93,000, but I wouldn't dare reinstall it without a rebuild...

For normal driving if your driving @45 or less leave it off...anything overt that like highway travel turn it on and it kicks the tranny down for better fuel economy...

I have 4.10 gears and at 120mph is as fast as she will go befor O/D
