View Full Version : Chicago Marauder photos: Lakeshore and Loop

Getting married in September near Green Bay, WI. Living in Chicago at the moment. My fiance, a professional wedding photographer, while happy to save money elsewhere on the wedding, wanted to splurge on the photographer, who includes in his package an "engagement shoot", designed for couples to have some good pics before the wedding and get comfortable in front of the lens.

We have dozens of other kissy photos of us in front of Lake Michigan and on bridges over the Chicago River, but below are some Marauder photos. Our photographer, eager to try something different, craned his Canon 5DmkII out the back of his Toyota Matrix and connected to an intervalometer, snapping a pic every few seconds while we drove south down Lakeshore Drive, through the Loop and River North, and back north again up LSD.

One Sunday morning at 6am, we got the mushy sunrise couple photos by the lake, and by 7am he set up his rig.

<a href="http://imgur.com/awWUgPu"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/awWUgPu.jpg" title="Hosted by imgur.com" width=720></a>

The rest of the journey is below. Once he got it framed up, I just stayed in his blind spot. I had a fun time continually braking and revving up to stay in formation. I don't recommend trying this during rush hour; it was almost empty at 7am on a Sunday morning.

The photographer dialed in a low shutter speed and a circular polarizer to see through the windows of the car clearly. There was some touch-up work on the photos after the shoot to the contrast and grain. I also used photo editing software to remove some Chicago bumper road rash from driving and parking in this town. Hopefully I can get my bumpers/hood repainted before September.

For those collecting ideas for Marauderville, my recommendations for cool places to drive in Chicago include Lakeshore Drive, Montrose Harbor, and possibly Upper/Lower Wacker. There are logistical challenges to herding a car cruise through the heart of any major city, but there are definitely some cool sights to see and cool places to visit on the north side, especially Lakeshore Drive sandwiched between the city and Lake Michigan.

Enjoy!

Very well done, being the very amateur I am I would love to shoot my Marauder or anyone's and get results half that decent.

Was considering a Sunday Sept 28 morning run to the Museum Campus or somewhere downtown but the Bears have a home game with green bay so that would be virtually impossible.

This LSD or lower Wacker cruise could be done at night? Less traffic.
We could do it on the last day of marauderville or the beginning as a welcome to Chicago or goodbye Chicago type thing...?

After a few years with my fiance, I've learned that the most important thing is lighting. Popping flash at the wrong time or angle and washing out the fine details can make things look like a crime scene photo instead of capturing what your retina captures. Because of this, and being an amateur myself, I try to get a lot of shots at sunrise/sunset, which is really flattering light for our cars. After the lighting is managed, then you have to start playing with the f-stop and ISO to get the right aperture and shutter speed to grab the light that you want.

Haha, true, I hadn't looked at the NFL schedule. Noon game against the Packers. Sunday morning is probably a really bad time to try to herd dozens of Marauders through downtown Chicago. I wonder if Sunday at 1pm would be smoother sailing...

Yeah, it was luck of the draw. The photographer has hundreds of other photos (it was automatically snapping a pic every few seconds) with other cars too close in frame or with sunlight reflecting on the windshield or with my mouth hanging open like an ape. These were the best shots, where the shot was clean and I didn't look too much like a doofus.

The Marauder looks as good as any of the more modern sedans shown in the TV ads.

This just stirs my heart. Gonna drive Sllverback 'round and 'round the block downtown looking at the reflection in the big glass windows.

I love doing this! My passengers look perplexed thinking I am looking at something inside an office building until they realize I am looking at the reflection of my car on the office building window.

Yes, please. I technically paid money for the shoot, so I want my fellow Marauder enthusiasts to benefit as well. I've gotten a ton of good advice and tips from this forum, so I want to give back what I can here and there.

Yes, Marauderville is still on. There are lots of things planned, as I explained in Louisville. Just a few loose ends as far as I know and as soon as Brad, Paul and myself can get together we will get it to Mary.

Awesome pics.

With street names like LSD and Wacker you really can't go wrong.

Also congrats on the engagement - if she likes Marahders, you'll do just fine.

Why don't we get together sooner than that? A nice round up at ex-meigs field seems to be in order.

wow nice phpotos, car looks great - touch up or not.

Lower Wacker is always fun though now that it has been rebuilt it is not quite the same as when I was younger. Of course that might be my age, I still like to push it down there but no where like we used to. Not far from there is the south side of Clarke Street where Ferrous had the Ferrari taken for a spin. We used to race there as well. Now I'm older, smarter and more cautious. That would be a fun night cruise LSD, to Lower Wacker then onto Congress back to LSD to I55 back to the hotel.

Larger tires should be in rear and smaller tires in front, seems to be reversed in the pictures. If the MM is an 300a then it doesn't make any difference, just saying.

COngrats on the nuptials. I know of lot of people with September anniversaries. It's a good month to get married

Those pictures are nice and would be cool if this was a "went for a random drive and took pics" thread

but this is your engagement shoot? kind of cheez-whiz. Trust me , I tried to get my Marauder in my engagement photos, but I'm glad I didnt. I did use my Marauder in my wedding (didn't use a limo) and we got a couple shots

But looking back on the day, I'm glad I didn't make a huge fuss. The engagements photos turned out spectacular and I married the most wonderful & beautiful woman in the world. I wouldn't trade pictures of my Marauder for any of it.

Again, congrats on the nuptials and here's to many years of happiness!

Thanks all for the well wishes on my wedding. Lost track of this thread in a summer full of me and my friends' weddings. My wedding had good weather, good food, good booze, and good times.

I know my tire sizes are very close, and the lens has a slight fisheye to it, but now you're making me wonder if Firestone gave me a "complimentary" tire rotation without telling me when I was having other work done. I'll have to check later.

Thanks man. Luckily for my wife, the Marauder was not the focus of the shoot. The bulk of our engagement photos (90%+) were shot at dawn in a bird sanctuary on Lake Michigan, with plenty of smooching and warm embracing, and no cars in frame. Our photographer, a close friend and camping buddy, said he also wanted to try something different, so we proposed shots of us leaning on or driving my car, and he rose to the task. After we wrapped up the dawn smoochy photos, then we got the photos in motion and we were home by 8:30am. Between my engagement shoot and Marauderville 12 in Chicago, I have enough photos of my car for a lifetime!
