This is an excellent example of why a catch can is a mandatory/must on a Modular motor!

Been S/C for for 140K and never had one. 80K on the current motor and to date no need.
The pics of the Eaton and IC were from an engine that was fully operational?

What the hell....I've pulled countless Eatons off Lightings and Cobras from 30k to 200k and have NEVER seen one look like that. Something else was very wrong.

Was being the key word, but yes. It was until three days before Louisville anyway. I've owned it two years.
This is the ebay motor that came with the trilogy a couple years ago, approximately 95k on the motor.

At least they make the cans now so you can screw fittings into it. I had to cut mine off and tig AN fittings on them.

You've seen some of my buddies shop, he told me he couldn't fab a set of the draft cans with the same materials for what they were selling them for, kinda like my "C" clips they fabbed, bet that won't happen again.

Methanol Injection ;)

I have been running Methanol for 80K and also wondered if that helps keep the intake cleaner?

Methanol or any liquid in the intake will definitely help.

Stuff like this is why, when I do my 4v/eaton swap, I'll be running remote breathers.

Been thinkin about snaggin a catch can for mine. Don't think I can quite sport the price of those 42 draft designs ultimate cans. Anyone got any other good quality suggestions? I also looked at their more simple designs such as the Stealth Oil catch can. I also saw that Sparta Performance has a billet catch can on their site. Anyone got any feedback?

I too did not go the $235 42dezign one. I was not aware they had a less fancy design for $130. I was referred to a UPR one for 03-04 cobra. Don't have link handy . Google UPR catch can

the car showed no signs of oil loss for my 2 years of ownership.

checking out catch cans and breathers now.

i like the theory of not even risking oil getting into the intake with a breather. still learning and researching..................

Are you sure it happened over a 2 year period? To me it looks like an engine failure.

i replied how and where i got the motor quoting your earlier question.

the motor was NOT a 2 year old motor.

my only point in this is to show others so they can try to avoid this happening to them.

and NO i did not have nasty exhaust out the tailpipes, well.....until the moment the motor went :bigcry:

Here is what I read, in addition to a lot of banter about things that have nothing to do with anything, 1) You post pictures of intake and IC covered in black oil with no info, 2) the engine failed 3 days before Louisville, 3) you owned the engine for 2 years and 4) "..This is the ebay motor that came with the trilogy a couple years ago, approximately 95k on the motor."

MarauderJack post - "Looks like the rings are GONE in that one!!"

Sailsmen post - "Are you sure it happened over a 2 year period? To me it looks like an engine failure."

To answer you - "Oil catch cans necessary?
I think so......"

Based on the history of the engine snd the failure I don't think the pics answer are "Oil catch cans necessary?.."

the title of the thread was a joke. it's obvious

rings gone?? car wasn't smoking or burning a noticable amount of oil in the two years i've driven it

"Are you sure it happened over a 2 year period? To me it looks like an engine failure."

i never stated it happened over a two year period

ultimately yes engine failed at 120mph on a non sanctioned track as they say. just a couple spirited jaunts. #1 let go.

badmerc1 asked if i'd contribute to trophies for mv, looks like i have 8 to mount on plaques :shake:

A possibility is an improperly routed/installed PVC system.

BigCars4Ever
06-06-2014, 04:47 AM
Here's my plan to keep my intake clean and still have a working PCV once the charger goes on. I'll still use a catch can too but this way I pull vacuum even under boost!

A possibility is an improperly routed/installed PVC system.

The same pics from post #1 were posted else where with this statement;
"The last 2 pics show a Trilogy S/C that did not use the pcv connection at the base of the lower intake. Notice the intercooler acted as a filter and stopped the oil from coating the lower intake. The bottom sides of the intercooler are clean. Again, the stock pcv valve was left intact and is not up to task. I don't have to tell you guys in either case the S/C and the intercooler looses it's efficiency.".
