How often do these senders go bad or just start to read incorrectly?

My original one went bad after 2 or 3 months. The replacement has been working fine for 8 years.

What happened when your original one went bad? Was it not reading, slow to read?
There was a big batch of them years ago that always went bad. Haven't had any trouble in the last 4 years or so.
Usually they just stop reading.

I've had a couple go bad in the last 9 years. The first one lasted a couple years, this one has been in for 7. The first one when it died just died. This one jumps around, mostly on bumps. So something has come semi loose inside it I guess. I checked the connections and they seem to be fine. So at least for me in two bad ones I had them go bad in a couple different ways.

Years ago I had a few that would last about 2 years. They read low and leak oil from the sending unit wire. The recent ones have been fine, lasting several years. I can get them at the O'reilly's here, they keep them in stock in the performance section.

Not reading... I nearly s**t  myself when I checked the gauge and saw 0 oil pressure.

Mine has just been reading a lot lower than normal. 75 psi at start-up, 30/35 psi after fully warmed up and cruising/heavy throttle and 25 psi at idle (which I know is about normal).
If I blip the throttle at idle the needle will fling from 25 to 30/35, it's not fluid movement like it used to be.
I'll probably get a new sender unit to try since they are about $35.

That's what I'd do.
I should keep one "in stock".

Mine has been busted for years. Changed it about 3 times and got fed up with it. It was during the time when Zach suggested there was a bad batch of them... I'll swap it

Ive seen them not move at idle and then shoot up under throttle, or just not move at all. I guess I been lucky, 6 yrs on the original sender.

I had heard about some of the early failures so I went w/the Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge. I had always used this type in the past & never had a problem and the one in my Marauder has been no different - no leaks no drips no errors!

My first one went out and I dissected it......amazingly complex arrangement with a rheostat!!

Yes, 2242 is the correct number. By the way, do NOT reuse the brass fitting from the old one. I have seen them get a small crack and leak. Use the new one that comes with the sender, cheap insurance.

I just got under the car and saw the sender terminal had a bunch of junk on it. Cleaned it off and see if that helps any once I leave work, if not I will be ordering a new one.

Interesting changed mine over to real o p gauge rite after I got my Marauder. lasted 8 years and 50k mi and started leaking. Replaced the sender and had a leak I couldn't stop with the new reducing bushing. Installed the old bushing and leak stopped. With this sender I read aprox 5 psi higher across the board. Never checked it with mech gauge. for what its worth.

Is this an easy bolt-in? Looks like a rather large unit. I sure like a real oil pressure indication. Probably go with a Scantool OBDII Bluetooth dongle for the trans temp.

Real easy mod, the sender unit is just a little bigger than a golf ball with a threaded male end.

Does it thread into the oil filter adapter?

You don't do anything to the gauge just change the sender ?

These are the "real" gauges:
Replacement Gauges – Autometer (2 1/16)
Oil Pressure – 4327 (should include the sending unit)
Sending unit – 2242
Voltmeter – 4391

Just put in the "real" gauges; didn't bother with the face swap. The real ones are easier to read at night anyways with only the perimeter lighting in my opinion. Especially with super white LEDs for a custom installed look.
Back to the topic; its so nice to watch that gauge finally move and keep a good eye on things.

Replaced the sender unit yesterday and oil psi reads just the same as before a lot lower than what it used to read.
Cold start-up: 85 psi
Warm Idle: 25 psi
Cruising 3rd/4th gear: 30/35psi
Under 50% or more throttle it reads 25-30 psi
I didn't start to get these readings until I had chain tensioner issue last fall.
I talked to my mechanic and he said if the motor hasn't popped yet with those readings then everything should really be fine. I took a long day trip last month in the MM and beat the piss out of it, didn't skip a beat and still runs strong. So I guess I will just let things fly and keep on driving it as normal.

So I replaced the sending unit too and I get that 25psi too and pressure rises with rpm, so should I get the guage too?

take reading with a known accurate mechanical gauge and compare. The reading you state are certainly high enough to float the bearings.

Both Mary's car and mine get about 100 lbs on a cold start and 25 lbs on warm idle. Cruising around town about 45-60 lbs.
Maybe call AutoMeter and ask if they've changed the calibration on the sender or something...

If you have a real gauge no need to replace as it's acting as it should.
My gauge reads over 100psi cold and 20 - 25psi hot. It will rise and fall with RPM changes.
