I test drove a V6 stick, shifter felt awful going into 1st gear, with two mechanical 'events' before actually being in gear, somewhat into 2nd also. Once in gear - it felt fine, did not jump out of gear. I tend to think a shifter rebuild would be in order. Anything deeper, ?? Costs??

There is a plastic rotating ball inside that might be starting to show wear. IIRC it is all held together with rivets, but easily serviceable, simple, and easy to reassemble with small machine screws or new rivets once drilled out.
You will always see a lot of slop in any gear as that is the nature of the cheap beast...
Or get an aftermarket shifter, they are beyond easy to replace. I have the stock GT500 one in my car, works perfectly fine but see an upgrade in the near future.
Only other possibility is the shifter is fine and the internal shifter forks are bent and should be upgraded.
