View Full Version : I found my exhaust leak!!!!

Within the first couple weeks of owning my trilogy marauder, I fixed an exhaust leak by changing the collector gaskets. I used Percy's aluminum gaskets. Fast forward three years and 60,000 miles later, I started noticing my exhaust getting louder and louder. Last week it got really loud!! I looked and could see carbon marks showing one gasket was leaking again. Here is the gasket I pulled out next to the replacement (exactly what I used last time).
I've never seen one melt and deform like this

That is odd. Percy's are great though. That's what my header gaskets are.

My Trilogy has Kooks headers, I thought it was very odd too, but think any other type of gasket would have come apart long ago. I was driving 300+ miles at 75-80mph twice a week, so it could have been the constant long duration heat that killed the gaskets

Dang man! Still better than my set up..
I'm going to modify my stupidly designed Stainless Works headers and pre muffs with V band clamps and weld on adapters.. Why would they design something that can't be easily removed? Makes zero sense to me.
Probably going to fab an H pipe as well while under there.
I really liked the ball and socket design too on my old MAC headers. Made install a leak free breeze. I just want to try the V bands after helping Brandon install his turbo. They are such a simplistic heavy duty design.

Has it had the AFR checked on a Dyno?
A lean air/fuel mixture will cause an engine to create more heat than a rich air/fuel mixture.

Had the same issues on my kooks, after going thru 2 sets I swapped to the Mr. Gasket ultra seal gaskets with exhaust paste (gray in color can't remember brand)

Just curious to know if all of the bolts were in when you found the leak?
I ask because the bottom bolt holes seem strangely close together.
If all of the bolts were not in at the time,
that might have allowed the gasket to disfigure like I has.:(

My aluminum gaskets did that too on my bird. Wonder how much power i lost cause the hole was choked down.

V-band clamps are the way to go, and I will use them the next time I change any exhaust system.

It hasn't been checked recently, but I think that I would have killed the engine by now if it wasn't right.

Every time I go through airport security I give them a show.

Yes, all the bolts were in and tight

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

V-band is the only way to fly! More time/money up front but saves headaches down the road. There is nothing quite so annoying as an exhaust leak.
