Brakes are done. I must say they stop with less effort, pedal is hard, and I'm happy. The look speaks for itself. Fills the stock wheel up. Shout out to the Zack, LJI372, and TCE. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Justbob, I got excited as soon as I trial fit the wheel. I think it's perfect, especially with stock wheels. I hate to see larger wheels with small brakes/rotors. Over 1/2 the cost too.

Get rid of the shoes and get a caliper with an integrated parking brake.

Looks like I'll have to spend a day at pull a part checking this rear brake deal out. I really think this can be done fairly simple. I wonder if the axles stick out further or closer from the housing flange on different models\years.
So many projects so little money.

Although it may appear a simple concept, the implementation is not as easy as you think. There are a lot of parts to line up.
Go ahead and design and build a kit, your work may be appreciated. Be warned we are a tough audience, and the heavy Marauder is hard on brakes. Any weakness will be set upon mercilessly.

Zack has a point though. And, if there was some easy bolt on swap I'm sure it would have been discovered long before now. Would be great to see an option for the rear though, if you find something please share.

I really appreciate the work Zack and Jerry did on the fronts. And I would appreciate any significant work done to figure a cost effective solution for the rears. I don't have the time or know-how to design these things from scratch and I'm thankful for those of you who do the work.

There two options for modded rear brake kits on a Marauder , Todds (TCE) kit , or Modify your own kit , Ill go with Todds custom kits every time! sometimes its easier and a smarter choice to break off dead presidents and get a product that has been modified and refined by someone who is the best at custom brake kits.

A possible rotor to use is from Nissan/Infinity. The 2011-13 M56 sport possibly others uses a 14" rear rotor with the similar brake shoe emergency brake setup. Nothing that new in any yards here to look at. I bought a set of rotors, but haven't gone any further yet.
If ever I had the motivation to do something for the rear brakes, the emergency brake would be thrown in the garbage. Lots more options with it removed.
I have never used it on any of the 7 Marauders I've owned over 12 years.

I just wanted to add that I don't have any pad to rotor overhang. If looked at from an angle it could give that illusion, but the beveled edge of the rotor makes it look that way.

What rotors did you use Drac? Looks great!!
Whatever rotors he bought is what I suggest....or the ones I used from NAPA with no holes.
The reason:
Both of these rotors do not have a bevel at the very top, like the Callahans do.
This means the pads will make 100% contact from top to bottom.
If you have the Callahans its no big deal though.

Ive been off the forums for the winter. Isabelle is in hibernation and Ive been on the snowmobile forums. With the recent thaw and the sled trails closing, I decided its time to start Maraudering around on the Marauder forums. Needless to say I read all 40 pages of this thread in one sitting and am adding my name to the list!
Its ironic because earlier today I was cringing at the fact I was planning to drop $1500+ on a big brake kit this year.

For those of you still hunting for parts, here's what I'm going with. Everything was bought from rockauto:
Calipers:
Centric 14162127 and 14162128
Rotors:
Centric 12661089SL and 12661089SR slotted only.
Pads:
Bendix D731 CT
Hopefully I'll be able to get to these in the next month or so. Calipers are in, the pads and rotors should be in later this week.

Not sure if you plan on painting the calipers and caliper brackets or leave as they come, but I'd recommend you paint the caliper bracket or at least clear coat it. I didn't and now I have to go back and paint it. It's starting to rust or discolor should it say

Yeah, I was planning on painting at least the calipers black. They came in silver which doesn't match my rears. I guess I'll be painting the brackets, too.

My uncle introduced me to a guy who recomended Autozone C-Max pads to me. He had a hot rod Stratus that he built & apparently pushed it so hard messing around with another guy on the freeway, the rotors were glowing orange with zero brake fade.

I think it should work on anything 03 an up as long as you have wheel clearance. You need at least 18" wheels, but depending on the shape of the inside of the wheel you could still have problems with certain wheels.

41187245/40/18
You'd have to measure the ID of a marauder wheel and compare it with yours. It needs to be as big or bigger than the MM wheel. No 2 18" wheels are alike when it comes to ID

I'm going to buy mine local, so I don't have to pay shipping. And the core is only $35 ea. Cheapest I could find a junkyard set for (to use as a core) was $18 ea, I would have to pull them so I'll just pay the core.

Well I finally got all of the pieces together and here are the results:
Some pics will show the difference in the new and old rotor diameter.
Other pics will show how sad and pathetic my rear brakes now look.
If Zack, Jerry and Todd would care to collaborate on the rears to come up with a budget big set I for one would be very grateful.
(Explorer or Flex maybe?) lol. ;)
In case anyone is wondering:
R1 Concepts rotors (ebay) $130.00 free s/h.
Wagner ThemoQuiet pads (ebay) $42.00 free s/h.
Of course Jerry's adapters $155.00 shipped.
Todd's TCE Zack kit lines $85.00 shipped.
Calipers from local FLAPS (which I was forced to overpay for) because they had corvette cast into them and had to be ground off $270 including brackets and core charges.:(
I see that others have done the conversion for cheaper.
Also those concerned about having to grind the steering knuckle for the adapter bracket clearance,
I used a large mill file and it took about 5 mins. per side.
I've made no attempts at high speed stops yet but normal stops are very positive and no more spongy pedal feel.:)
And they look great.
Now,
about those rears.............

So everything installed perfectly as described!!!
The only hesitation I had was opening up the ID on the brake rotors. Turned out was the easiest part - centered the old rotor over the hole face to face leaving a nice thin even ring of bright metal on the new rotor exposed. Then I used a Dremel tool to remove the exposed ring. Only a couple of minutes work and if you leave a little dirt/rust on the spindle/hub when you test fit the rotor it will leave a little on the ID surface of the rotor on any high spots - quick touch up w/Dremel and a perfect fit!
I can't believe how firm the pedal is w/new SS lines - after almost 13 years and 150K+ mile I guess I got my $$'s worth out of the OEM rubber lines!
I used the Powerslot Drilled & Slotted rotors front and rear for a nice match. I can't get over how massive the front rotors are compared to the stock 12" units - thicker rotor w/ HUGE cooling vanes! Also used Powerslot's Extreme Z26 Carbon Fiber/Ceramic pads front and rear. Never been a big fan of Ceramic as in the past they didn't stop as well as the metallic pads (for me that is).
Just finished the first 120 miles since I finished the install on Friday morning and I have to say right out of the box the stopping power was very much improved over stock!! During the bedding in stops the front wheels were actually locking up/activating the ABS when making the firm/hard stops from 40mph on dry pavement - something the OEM brakes could NEVER do! You could easily bounce someone's head off the dash if you were so inclined!! LOL.
In all I have to say this is the BEST mod I have purchased as far as installation and initial results I have EVER done since I've owned the car from brand new!
I drive this car everyday all year long in all weather and I fully expect this set-up to work/last as well/long as the OEM!
Thanks to all for all the hard work and effort that went into bringing this to the membership - Very Well Done!!
To all who are sitting on the parts and haven't installed them yet - WTF are you waiting for!!!! DO IT!

I'm new here and wanted to thank all of you for your vast knowledge. I just finished my 2003 grand marquis upgrades tonight and couldn't be happier. I used Zack's and lji372's brackets, brake motive rotors, the c5 calipers (one needing the corvette imprint grinded off), tce front lines and ceramic pads. The car is freaking incredible. Brakes are outstanding. Did have an issue with the wheel weights. That was painful, but discount fixed it. I also replaced all of my suspension and steering components front and rear. Added a 1in rear sway bar was well. I love this car. I have sports car handling and braking. Now I just need the power. Trying to decide on power adder or just a 5.4 swap. Thanks again for all of your shared information. If you haven't done the big brake upgrade...do it!

The rotors are from frozen rotor. They are power slot rotors that have been cyrogenically frozen.
i had this type of rotor on my car since 2007 and never had a warping problem

Big difference They work great best brake setup i ever had. I took it out today and at first i noticed the pedal was hard and stiff. I performed the brake bedding procdure and noticed as soon as you start adding slight pressure on the pedal i was already slowing down, very effictive, and if you try a panic stop it feels like your going though the window the car stops so quick.

Started reading thsi thread back when it started, before the brackets were even available, and then completely forgot about it. Guess I'm SOL on getting a set now, aren't I? Because my brakes suck ass and I would like to change that. I must say, though, that when I got better pads and rotors than OEM in the rear, driving in the snow all wheels would lock up and completely defy the ABS. Did a lot of winter sliding until I got a different car for a DD.

first option is all 4 lines for stock calipers.
second option that says complete 4 with zack fronts, are the lines for the zack big brake kit and 2 rear lines for stock calipers.
The 3 option is the fronts only for the zack kit

When I did the original setup,, my rotor was flat all the way to the edge.
Some rotors come with a bevel on the outer edge, which will create the illusion of an overlap.

Are you talking about the inside of the rotor where the pads don't reach? Or the outside? I'm pretty sure the outside is even with the pads. I'll have to check, but the car's buried in snow right now.

Somebody is thinking. The factory Marauder bias is too much to the front, shifting some braking to the rear is very helpful. The parameters you can adjust are the ratio of piston areas front/rear and the ratio of rotor diameters. I have not looked into the piston area ratios of the Zack/LJ setup as I already have a Wilwood solution with added rear bias.
It is also worth mentioning when mixing floating and fixed calipers on the same car to calculate the area ratios one must double the piston area of the floating calipers because of the way they act on both sides of the rotor hydraulically.
But here are the OEM parameters:
front 48mm pistons (2 per) = 5.61" piston area
rear 48mm piston = 2.805" area
F/R ratio = 2
The Wilwood kits come out at about 1.64 piston area F/R and 14"/13" rotor ratio. This seems to work very well, probably a good goal.

I remember Triple threat mentioned that the eight second beast , had modded rear brakes because of the change in size of the rear wheels.
Also the bias was adjusted towards the rear to compensate for the changes.
I love that you guys are pushing the envelope , even after all the years.

Yes there are. I have taken the remainder and sent them off for a bright black anodize process so they won't oxidize. Waiting on final cost, if it's marginal I'll eat it. If it's a bit more they may go up a few dollars in price.
I should have them back Thursday or Friday and get the final cost. :beatnik:
