View Full Version : Exhaust ideas for less loud/drone

I know exhaust comes up alot for discussion, headers, mufflers, cats. I just picked up my Trilogy car from MO's and drove it home. The loudness and drone in the car at highway speeds is beyond my preference. The car was pretty much built to be a weekend racer from previous owner so loud factor and performance were the goals. Car has Ceramic coated kooks headers then x-pipe into possibly kooks mufflers to factroy resonated tips. ( I thought it had magnaflows inthe for sale listing, but i do have a reciept of the kooks system purchased with mufflers and no recepit for magnaflows)
I know we all have our preference for sound, the car has 4.10s so the rpm is higher anyway so the exhaust note/drone at highway speeds is more pronounced. and I would prefer it to be more subtle when cruising, idling etc..WOT is a different stroy.
Marty and Jeff from MO's are looking into ideas for me, but I thought I would throw this out there to see who else has similiar set up and yet has a different muffler or whatever to tone it down. I read a few older threads about a muffled x pipe and also Borla pro xs mufflers. I don't want to just throw money at it. I am looking for a viable solution.

I added dampers (weights that bolt into the pipe joins) and it reduced the harshness in the cabin.
I have 410s and Magnaflows that are quite aggressive. Driving at 70 into a headwind was too much for me, most noticably on the way home with the car when I bought it, Feb 2012, Tennessee -> Minneapolis. Adding the dampers reduced this noticeably, as well as reducing or eliminating a vibe I could feel through certain RPMs, especially when decelerating via engine braking.

Yes, I remember the post about the dampers. I am also interested in toning down the exhaust note in general on the outside so I'm thinkning a better muffler choice might be it.

I might try this. I have Flowmaster 40's that are a little more aggressive than I'd like, but I don't want to swap them out.

I'll be making the switch from AT2525's to the XL versions, after reading alot of reviews the resonator and added length of the muffler get rid of most of the drone associated with a straight through muffler design.

Just put on magnaflow 12586 on black.
Deleted cats, tips have the resonators.
3:55 rear end
And it's purrfect IMHO
So much so I have another set waiting at autozone and an appointment at the exhaust shop to ditch the flowmasters on silver. Although I won't expect the same results with more hp 4:10's and no resonators it can't possibly be as bad......
Oops* I have an xpipe

18" Magnaflows and an H-Pipe will probably be the answer??
For some reason my X-Pipe fabricated by Bryan Jones (Grand Muffler) was not only RASPY but had a lot of drone....H-Pipe and dampers put all of the "Melodic Motor Music" out back......VERY NICE!!:bows::D

Extending the tips about an inch further out from the bumper helps with drone.

I have the VTs and they have a little drone between 2700-3200 rpm. I also get this warble (best way I can describe it) occasionally. Usually on upshifts during slow acceleration.

Put in the factory mufflers with the factory dampers.

I don't have a factory h pipe nor factory mufflers around. The car was tuned with the headers and 3 inch x pipe set up, so I'm not in a position to pull off the x pipe and retune it. I don't have factory dampers neither so I'm possibly limited to mufflers only right now. does everyone's header and x pipe set up become a lot louder?

First of all, no.
I'm not retuning the car for a drastic x pipe etc change. I'm looking for set ups with others that have headers, x pipes rear cat delete, mufflers who maybe don't have a loud car. I don't want loud every time I want to drive it. It can be loud at wot but cruising down the highway or thru town it surely can be mellowed.

Then go back to my first post :D
S.w, no cats, xpipe, stock tips, and magnaflows (12586 22" body length)
You would need 12589 for the 3" pipes.
I like quiet and am quite happy
Limited 360 runs the same length magnaflow as well. That's why I went that route
I did keep the old mufflers and h pipe in case you change your mind :D

I think the x pipe is 3 inch and the over axle is 2.5? On mine , If you or James is able to make a sound clip let me know. I'm not sure what muffler is on mine now

I'm running Kooks headers, Magnaflow cats, the x-pipe from Marauderjack I bought years ago (thanks Jack!), 18" Magnaflow mufflers, and stock pipe from the mufflers back. Quiet in town and regular driving, sounds great @ WOT, and no drone on the highway. Click on the pic for video.

Running Flowmaster's super 40's with stock pipes and stock rear end.
At highway speeds 70-80 mph quiet as a mouse...in fact too quiet for me.
Gotta Love It!
