View Full Version : Rear view mirror.

Has anyone (other than me) noticed that the rear view mirror tends to create a very large blind spot? Especially when at four way intersections.
I pulled out in front of a van today that I didn't even see.
If we had hit, it would have been my fault for sure.

Nope. New one on me. But, folks here in the A-T-L don't know how to "do" 4-way stops correctly. That's why the 4.10s are good...you get there...everybody just looks at each other...you just punch it and GOOOOO. :burnout:

I have noticed the same thing, in fact I did almost the exact same thing as you at a 4 way stop, only the car I almost hit was a Sheriff Dept Crown Vic. Fortunately I knew him, but from certain angles, It doest block your line of vision. I was thinking about relocating it, or removing it altogether, I use my side mirrors more than the rear view anyway.

I think the "blind spot" in question is caused by the physical size of the mirror, not by an area which can't be seen in the mirror.

I, too, notice this. The mirror is bulky and blocks plenty of windshield area. Unfortunately, you'll just have to learn to drive with it.

Try driving a CVPI ten hours a day... between the mirror, the Stalker radar antenna hanging off the bottom of the mirror, and the MVR video camera mounted to the right of the mirror, I can't see ****z out the passenger side of the windshield. I always pull out in front of people like an idiot. Then I have to make it seem like "I meant to do that", or the public calls and complains.

I'm pretty sure all of my mirrors are the same, if not extremely similar. I take about 2 minutes adjusting my mirrors if I sit in the car after someone else has driven it. I have no blindspots and can see everyone around me as long as I check.

I personally feel the forward blind spot is larger in the MM than any of my previous Crown Vics. I think it actually sits a little lower on the windshield so it does not interfere with the overhead console.

Hmmm, writing about it make me wonder if I can raise it up some... or maybe move it off center.

If you haven't noticed this blind spot, you probably haven't noticed all those defensive drivers taking evasive action around you...

Thank God for the human anatomy, my head turns on my neck really well...and it allows me to see what's around me.:P

Who relies on mirrors alone:confused:

I rely on mirrors because this whole blind spot thing is only created if you look at it...which then you're taking your eyes off the road in front of you and looking for something you can't see? Or at least in my car...I check if I have too but 99% of the time I have a BETTER view of beside/behind me with my mirrors adjusted right.

My front blind spot is what caused me to not see the dog so quickly last week.

The mirror base has a lot of adjustment built in. You can minimize the blind spot by repositioning the mirror as high and as close to the roof as possible. I do this on all my cars. Unless you're really tall in the saddle, you'll be able to see under the mirror no problem.

I took a good look at how the mirror is mounted to the windshield.
It is lower than other cars because of the overhead console.
But it is mounted on a shaft (about three inches long) which allows it to have two pivet points. One at the windshield mounting base and one at the mirror itself.
So if you point the shaft section up towards the roof as far as it goes (pivet point one) and then adjust the mirror itself (at pivet point two) it reduces the size of the blind spot in your forward view.
It's not a big difference but it's better than nothing.
At a later date I might look into remounting it higher up on the windshield.

I have also tried the raised shaft trick but there is one complication - you then get some of the bottom of your overhead console showing up in the top portion of your rear view. Not a huge problem but it's there... I guess we choose our poison!

Thanks!
