View Full Version : squeak under hood?

OK Marauderites - once again I seek your knowledge.
I have a squeak in the engine compartment. This is a medium pitched squeak that happens when the engine is warm (never noticed it when temp is cold outside or when engine is cold).
It happens over bumps, mostly when the car is level or when the nose is higher than the rear (going uphill). It happens sometimes at idle, meaning the engine vibration can also cause it. It sounds like something is intermittently rubbing on something else at certain angles.
Here's the :mad2: part. It only happens when the hood is closed. I can recreate the squeak by closing the driver's door in my garage, but as soon as I pop the hood latch it goes away. I have tried manually working back and forth everything I can think of when the hood is open and cannot reproduce the squeak.
Therefore, I am thinking it is something either in the latch itself or something that is in contact with the hood when closed. Maybe it is the latch on the hood when it is locked that is rubbing.
Can someone help me by suggesting how to go about finding the problem? The squeak is pretty loud at times and when I drive by people they can hear it. I hate that.
I tried the dealer, but of course they "cannot replicate the problem."
Please help if you can. I know this is probably like helping your mom fix the computer over the phone.
Thanks all,
-A

I think you answered your own question. IMO the hood (rubber bumpers) need to be adjusted.
Above the transmission in the trans tunnel there is a big sheet of insulation held to the frame with push on nuts.
2 studs stick out of the frame and pass through a metal plate attached to the insulation.
Well, Ive seen more than 1 Marauder now with only 1 push nut installed. The Metal plate rubs the stud and causes the most god awful annoying squeak you ever heard. Its fixed now.
Look for the nut to be missing on the passenger side.

Just spray some lube on the hood latch and it will at least eliminate that. That is the most common squeek in front of these cars.

Yup, that's what mine needed.

Mine was driving me nutz until I adjusted the rubber things...still makes noise but not as bad.
Mine too. I took some bearing grease and greased every nook and cranny I could get to on my hood latch. Seemed to help.

Exactly what mine was doing! Drove me crazy too!
Like they said above...I adjusted the rubber stops for the hood and put a little grease on the ends. I also greased the latch. NO MORE SQUEEKS!

This is what happpened to me.
First determine if the squeak results from the following action:
Open the driver's door and step on the inside edge of the door and rock the car. If it squeaks, repeat the action but with the hood open. If it doesn't occur again, then you know it is caused by the hood rubbing against the two rubber stops on each of side of the front edge of the hood.
I used some Armor All at first, then my dealer tod me about Dupont Krytox 18004247502.
I use this for the all of the door gaskets because they tend to squeak after about 5000 miles.
Tell me what happens.

Yeah sounds like mine. THe hood latch (you should hear it when you close the front doors). Little oil and adjust the hood stops. My dealer sees me about once a month for it.

Clarification
I want everyone to realize that my squeak had nothing to do with the hood latch. It had to do with the rubber tipped stops on either side of the front underside edge of the hood.

I had this problem and the dealer fixed it by adjusting the bumpers and lubricating them. It reappeared recently.
The fix is simple and if you, as I do, think that it's worth a couple of bucks not to have to subject yourself to free waiting room coffee, try this. Go to your local auto parts store (I used Pep Boys) and buy a can of spray white lithium grease. I bought Pyroil. Spray it on the hood latch mechanism and the latch. I also gave the bumpers and the landing area a shot. Instant fix.

I haven't been able to do anything with this yet - we've been remodeleing the baby's room and building her furniture. :)
Anyway, I do have a can of silicone that should work on the bumpers, but I wonder about the latch. Can't hurt to try I guess.
Thanks,

I had the same prob - squeaks going over minor bumps in the road. Really annoying. I could also hear it when idling in a parking lot so I pushed down on the corner of the hood over one of the rubber stops and Viola! no more squeaks. I turned the stop up about 1/2 a turn and now no more squeaks, sitting or flying.
Thanks to all for the previous insight. This site is the best.
