View Full Version : How fast do you drive, really?
I want to test the waters and see how fast you drive. Please, let me know. Be realistic.
For example, when on the highway what is your most comfortable cruising speed? What speed do you dial in and cruise at?
Since highway speeds present the least amount of variable let's keep it at that. If you do 100 down Broadway in NYC I don't really want to know about it. OTOH, if you do 90 on the LIE or Rt. 90 let's hear what you have to say.

LMAO!! LOL
I accelerate like a demon. I used to be into going real fast until I tripped the 140 mark on the MM. Then I scared the ****z outta myself and haven't been past 100 since. On the highway with no other cars around, I usually set the cruise control at about 83. That seems to be the "sweet spot" for my exhaust... it sounds REAL quiet.

Well in the weeks before the accident I really started slacking off. I usually kept 5 to 10 above the pace of traffic as long as I didn't stick out (it's possible, and I really mastered it after a few months). But I was really keeping AT the pace of traffic for a while, which is usually 5 to 10 over, 10 over exactly on the interstate.
NOW after driving around with my friend in his Lexus and keeping my mouth shut about how he drove (I'm mostly impatient) he's kind of left a mark on even if I get there 5 minutes later, it was worth driving no more than 5 over...and a lot more attention could be spent on the road and other drivers, NOT my speedometer.
However...I still can't stand when a crappy song comes on the radio and we both know it's absolute junk, and he still doesn't change the channel.
So lately, and then when I do get my car back, I have been and will be trying to blend in as much as possible, not sticking out in anyway (going too fast or too slow) paying attention to road conditions at all times.
This is my goal and I'll get back to you in a week or two and tell you how well or how poorly I've done:up:
Depends upon my level of sobriety.

Don't give us that junk. :) We ain't bying it.

In real numbers, I cruise to and from work at 78 on the interstate in Northern Virginia (when I am running opposite rush traffic, of course). I figure that sounds a whole lot better than 80. Have pushed it to over 90 only a couple times. To be honest, I have had the car 6 months and have not even used the cruise control yet -- so I don't dial in anything.

04-14-2004, 05:57 PM
Um, fast. :baaa: :P
I set my cruise at 2500 RPMs normally.
I cruise at about 75-80 to and from work, as the "revenue collectors" like to stake out that portion of the highway. That lets me pass almost anyone around here.
I have only been above 100 a couple times - once showing up a Saab, and once for just seeing what she could do. Hit 120 once, that's enough for me. I have a daughter on the way.
My "sweet spot" for mileage anyway is 72, which is about 2200 on the dial. I never follow that guideline unless folks'r watchin', because that keeps me the same speed as everyone else, which I believe to be safe.
Thanks,
-A

I have been trying to desperatly resist the urge, but on lookers and those drivers not sure
if I am a smokey or not, tend to keep me at 5 - 10 mph over the posted limit.
On the open road, I tend to do 10 - 15 mph over the limit.
I will drive the posted speed in construction zones because, after all,
even construction workers have families too...
I can't wait for my first trip to Buffalo.
There is an open stretch of road on 17 (FUTURE 86) that will allow me to stretch her legs.

Excellent point, because I only do 4 above the speed limit as well. I'm sorry, but speed enforcement is a religion around here and i'm not going to screw around with it. There is a small section of highway where I like to floor it, but that's only when there is no other traffic since it's between two well used speed traps. The only exception I make to the 4 above rule I follow, is during the morning commute since I stay out of the high speed lane, and do what traffic is doing.

The usual setting on the cruise on the Interstates is 68. However, as we do not have the certified heads in our speedos...I imagine that my average is in the 65-69 range at a posted 65. Never more than 5 over posted in town as the County Mounties now have laser guided ticket books... :nono:

I usually don't drive the Marauder much during the week (commute in my Ford Ranger- gas savings) but sometimes I can't stand it and take the car on the 124 mile round trip to work. On those days, I typically leave the house about 4:30am and the roads are clear. There's a straight area on I-35 between Burleson and Fort Worth. I like to kick it up between 110-115mph for short periods. sometimes, I don't even see another car. Daily habit? No, just getting the cobwebs cleared...ya know? Coming home from work (about 3:30pm) I average about 45mph with traffic. Daily habit? No, just getting the cobwebs cleared...ya know?
What's weird might be my the game I play in the Ranger- I chart the MPG each time I fill up and feel good when I do better on mileage...Is the truck fun to drive? No, it's a tool to do a job. I cherish driving the Marauder...

I have labored over this subject too much :depress: .Now I have to be extra careful because I got my first speeder (62ina50)in about 20 years.I was stupid cause I'ed seen this trap on my way home from work dozens of times. I was preoccupied thinking of the several interviews pending the new dealership I may go to work for . I told the cop I was getting used to the new car which was not a lie. My last vehicle was an '86 F250sc 460cid that you realized your speed with out watching the speedo. I always respond to police with the utmost respect he said "what year is this merc" I said"2004" I sensed that he was jealous ."do you know why I pulled you over?" I said yeah "I noticed the speed limit change back there too late" He responded "I got you way before the speed limit changes." He followed up with "I got you for 62 in a 5omph zone ". I thought to myself "It's a good thing he wasn't around yesterday while I was blasting off down Rt. 31 from Crystal lake to Mchenry or I'ed be in some deep kimpshi". :help: I oppoligized told him that I was stressing over a new job and still getting used to the new car. "When's the last time that you had a ticket?" I hesitated, then said "about twenty years" He followed up with "have you ever been to traffic school?" This baffle'ed me for a second because of his last question and I was nervous. Visions of my bad boy days were soaring through my head I stumbled "Not for a long time":nono: After he went back to run my ID, He returned an said"I'm going to give you a ticket that you can pay by mailing the money to adress listed, you will be assinged to traffic school 3to4 hours one evening if you pay the fine and attend the school this ticket will not be part of your driving record." I thought oh thanks ! then I realized he could have been a nasty :fire: son of a gun.(like some I have come across) He left me with " Please dont let this ruin your evening":bigcry: I thanked him and continued on my way.Back to the topic I realize alot has to do with my mood , if I notice myself speeding I try to understand what am I really in such a hurry for crusing is more relaxing than white knuckleing it .I have to admit that I love the feeling of the "g" force when you peddle down so," whats a guy or girl supposed to do"?:help: ^ for marauder chick & others;)

RFO,
No insult taken.
I think that you may have misread my post. I am more interested in how fast people drive their cars verses the top speeds of their cars. From what I have picked up on MMnet these cars can do quite well at top speeds. I am glad too see that there are quite a few who know how to responsibly test that on the track.
I hope that this clarifies it a bit and I hope that none of my words are found insulting by you. :)

My wife's family is from Detroit, even years we do holidays there odd years we stay here. Most of my interstate drives are on I94 between Chicago and Detroit(70mph limit) and I69 and I75 in Indiana(65mph limit) when making sales calls. On the Detroit trips i cruise around 80/85 depending on traffic in my 20 years of making this drive I'd say the average speed of traffic is around 75/79 mph. Michigan drivers are as a rule very courteous and 9 out 10 will get out of the left lane when you approach. The Indiana drivers are a completely different story where only about 4 out of 10 will let you pass so my cruise is usually set around 75. It seems lately that Indiana is becoming more like Ohio as far as enforcement goes, dang boys are driving unmarked z28's and I saw a black cherry Impala SS pull someone over near Indy last week.
Paul T. Casey

Depending on location, it varies. Here in AL, on the interstate, I'll set the cruise a tick under 80. Keeps me about even with the traffic flow. Back home in RI, 72 does the same thing. When I'm travelling through VA on I-81, I pretty much set it at 67. My thinking is they're not going to give some long haired Yankee driving a race car any breaks.
As a general rule I cruize between 75 and 85 mph. If conditions allow cruising at 80 seems to be where I am comfortable. If I am in a bit of a hurry and conditions allow I might break 85 but that is not often.
Best,
Dan

On interstates, I try to keep it about Speed + 10 at most. Sence Virginia has outlawed radar detectors I have to reley on visual scanning.
As for how fast I've been... Well I bounced off the 117 govener a couple of times before my first upgrades, then fried my motor at 120+ after my first round, and I've flerted with 130 on a copule of ocations. Last week a really nice officer who pulled me over wanted to know where I was going at "over 100 mph"
Fortunetly, he was a detective with no trafic equipment in his Impala, and he didn't feel like going to traffic court, so he told me to keep it to a dull roar. I thought I was going to jail myself. Oh, and he was jelous of my car.

City limit 45-50 -( cruise at 50 ). High Way limit 70 - (Cruise 80. )
As my dad taught me 20+ years ago when I was learning to drive, "Go as fast as you can afford." If anyone has gotten a ticket in PA, you know that's not real fast.
That being said, I go 70 in a 55, and up to 76 in 65 as crusing speeds. My rule of thumb is to never be the fastest guy on the road, but to also be passing at least 3/4 of the other vehicles.
I slow it down when my girls are in the car. I'm still the ever cautious, over protective, Glock carrying father. I even forgave them for spilling their drink boxes in the back seat. What a wuss I am, huh?

Few people enjoy Vodka, or any hard liquor streight up the first time. It is an aquired taste, that you may never aquire. But, someday, you may be courting a nice young lady, and be invited to dinner with her family, and her father may invite you to sit down and have a drink with him. You caould say "No thank you, sir, I don't drink." THis has many benifits, but socialy may make things a bit ackward. But if you were to say, "Thank you, I will have a small drink." Area of the country seems to be one factor, with availability of straight, high visibility highways in open country, and amount of traffic, crossroads etc. It seems state that do have the above type areas, with less population density, may be a little more tolerant of speeds within "reason" above the limit, than in areas of greater pop. In Oklahoma we have a lot of turnpikes - we don't like the tolls, but the sl is 75, except in urban areas, and 70 on interstates. The Smokeys generally won't bother you up to about 78, maybe 79 on turnpikes, and 74-75 on interstates. I mostly drive those speeds, except if someone, or a group, is going faster i will follow along, up to 85-90, but i try not to lead much without good visibility, and Passport turned on. I think trying to sustain those speeds, or more, is obviously more likely to get you into trouble, esp. in hilly regions where you cant see a mile or two ahead. A funny time i recall on I-40, heading east thru Arkansas on the way to Kentucky before Christmas a few yrs. ago - we encountered a taxi from La., driving like he was #3, and a guy in a miniBlazer trading positions with him averaging 90, the Blazer driver's wife with her face in a map the whole time. We went from west of Little Rock to Nashville, where we separated, at mostly those speeds. Even my wife didn't didn't tell me to slow down as much because we were so entertained by the cab and the Blazer. Don't like to use cruise much - too boring, only when my leg needs to move. I will do higher speeds only for the time it takes accelerate then shut down, when i am as certain as i can be there is no place ahead where a driver will appear suddenly, or a smokey, the road is good, etc.
Speed is of course dangerous, but i would bet more fatalities are caused by just plain careless or inept driving, as in some that drive 55 or less all the time, but are continuously crossing the center line, including on curves. A trooper in our area stopped me recently in my 5.0, I was scurrying back to my office after picking up the car at lunch from the dealer, where they had done an intake cleaning service, so i was a little in a hurry, and also "testing", and didn't have my Passport in the car. He clocked me doing 74, and gave me a warning, maybe because he thought i was otherwise a prudent driver. The same officer worked an accident last Friday in which a 12 yr. old girl was killed when her step-dad ran a stop sign and was hit by a log truck. I don't think that was speed related, but might have been.
Carelessness and "wreckless" driving kills. It probably helps having a very responsive chassis with good brakes - and a 'cage. Joe
So, everyone, here is the continuing question to this thread...
Section 2B.13 of the Federal High Administration (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices states: When a speed limit is to be posted, it should be within 5 mph of the 85th-percentile speed of free-flowing traffic. Another another federal study, this one known as RD-85/096 says,"(Matching the speed limit to the 85th percentile) results in speed limits that are not only acceptable to a large majority of the motorists, but also fall within the speed range where accident risk is lowest.
So, when you compare your speed to what you think are the 85th percentile speeds for the roads you drive on how far off the mark are you really?
Hmmm, am I making you think? :)
Best,
Dan

Exactly, 2.583 mph over the 85% percentile. If the next question is more difficult, I will have to pass. We are getting waaay too personal and complicated here. I'm putting away my sliderule now.

If that were true, the speed limit in the D.C. area would be 95mph.

You mean it ain't ???? Naaaah, I see the signs all the time and there is a big "95" right in the middle. Signs are red, white and blue --- shaped like a shield.
It seems that I might have lost a reader or two.
The "85th percentile speed of free flowing traffic" statement means that, if you took all of the speed limit signs away and let the drivers drive at whatever speed they felt comfy at, the speed at which 85 percent of all of those drivers drive is the ideal speed for that roadway.
The second statement makes the point that when speed limits are set using the above criteria, the "85th percentile speed", accidents go down and you basically have set the speed of the road at the safest possible speed.
It is a good way to determine if the speed of a road is set too low for the road. Ex. 55 mph when "everyone" does 75 all the time.

Dan

Not trying to flame, Dan, but . . .
I say "huh?" this time.
Not 'cuz "I don' GIT it," but like someone says, the speed limits would be a lot higher then.
If the speed limit is 45, drivers will average 50. IF the speed limit is 1000, the drivers will average 1005. Or something like that. People are comfortable going as fast as they think they can get away with, weather notwithstanding.
So around the Chicago 'burb interstates where I go 80 and get routinely passed, it is safe to go 90? I don't buy that for a second. Cars are safer, but humans aren't.
I consider myself a good driver, and I have a very safe car for the highway, and I keep it in good condition. I feel "comfortable" at 90 MPH. That doesn't make it safe for anyone. I don't go 90 for that reason and because it will soon get very expensive. I do go, however, as fast as I think I can get away with and still be safe, which is about 10 over. Doesn't matter the zone. ('cept round schools - I am a boy scout around them)
Just my $0.05

**UPDATE**
I've been measuring my speeds over the last 2 weeks.
I've done a steady 2.04 mph walking the dog and 25.76 mph running after him when he see's a squirell.
But I get my car back tomorrow morning at 8!:banana2:  :banana2:

I doubt that James will forget about the Marauder, but you're right about the fresh air and exercise.

I live in a pretty rural area, I think I avg. around 70 most of the time on state routes. Interstate, 80 is pretty comfy. In town, 1 mile under posted speed.
Until this Sunday on the way home from church I passed an unmarked sheriff. My daughter likes the "belly" hills on the state route we take home. There was a very slow moving mini van in front of us so I passed them only to have a Lumina up a bit from them. So I passed him too. Well as I'm passing his rear quarter I notice a gold star on the back next to the plate. Well, I'm already at his door and there's nowhere to go, but ahead of him. So as sly as I could I look out the corner of my eye and sure enough he's in a uniform just shaking his head. So I finish passing him prepared to be pulled over, but he never did. I can't believe it. So, today I've slowed things down considerably.

I might get interested in other cars, but I'll never forget the Marauder and it's still a big priority for me to own one!
I love the fresh air though, the weather is great!

Nah, I don't see how anyone could forget about owning a Marauder. If James forget's about owning a Marauder, who knows what kind of monstrosity he might end up in. Heck, I can just picture him right now rolling down the street in a Chrysler 300 because he forgot about owning a Marauder..........

Back to the original post question_
I think if you took all these replies and rolled them up and threw them out --- it would say--"We all drive as fast as we can safely get away with....Period!"
Cause I feel that is what has been said here and most of us REALLY do that anyway....regardless of the posted speed, excluding construction and school zones of course.......my .02 anyway,,,,,,,Tom

To quote a modern philosopher - "when I rev the motor, I want people to think the world is coming to an end!. . . "
Yes, as fast as is safe. Last week that was 30km/h in a 100km/h zone, today it was 130km/h in a 100km/h zone.

I believe there are actually a few states out there that have prima facie speed limits where you can actually legally exceed the speed limit if you can justify that it was indeed safe. Anyone now if their states fall under this? I know OH doesn't since i've checked.............
