. . . and I'm embarrassed to bring it up, but it is the first of the year.
I was driving home from a meeting last on I-79 just at dusk. The weather was nice and with all of the rain we had the prior 2 days, the road was clean, but now dry.
I was only traveling about 60-65 mph in a 55 mph zone when I passed a Chevy Monte Carlo that was following a car in front of him. As soon as I passed him, the Monte Carlo pulled immediately behind me, right on my tail. As we passed by the slower moving car in the right lane, he cut back into the right lane and gunned his engine and passed me on the right. I never changed speeds and I estimated he was moving about 70 mph, maybe 75 mph.
I'm thinking to myself, "You have got to be kidding me. This guy can not be serious." As my brain was processing this event, he had pulled away by 15-20 car lengths, maybe a little more.
I should have let it go because, come on, its only a V6 Monte Carlo - a quite anemic V6 at that. But I just took my snow tires off last week and haven't really given the car a good run since the OEM 18" have been on. Good, clean, dry road conditions. Van Halen blaring from the stereo, (I know, my wife thinks I have a maturity problem too.) And someone that needed to be taught a lesson.
The amazing thing about our Marauders that I redicovered is the rate of acceleration at the higher speeds. I went from 65 to 95 mph in no time. I didn't time it, but I bet it was 2, maybe 3 seconds. The Monte Carlo saw me coming and sped up, but I moved by him like it was nothing. He gave an effort to keep up, but he was either nervous, or his car wasn't handling or he simply couldn't keep up. I never saw him again.
I relate this story certainly not out of pride. After all, it was like when I play basketball against my 3 year old daughter in the drive way. But some people need to realize that a decent paint job and tinted windows does not translate into performance.
