View Full Version : Popping in rear end

Just started happening this evening...
Ran out to go grab a movie. 2-3 mile drive in total. No noise going to the store but when I got back in the car and put it in drive to exit the parking lot (soon as I hit the gas) I heard the first pop. Didn't think much of it...(thought it was a stick or a rock or whatever.) Then I made a left out of the lot and I heard it again...still didn't think much of it, thought maybe whatever was stuck in there just fell out.
Nearly every turn/acceleration afterward resulted in this loud popping. It can be felt throughout the entire car and is pretty violent.
Got under there with a flashlight to look for obvious suspension damage or something but saw nothing unusual.
With the car having a LSD my first thought was that the spider gear is severely worn and is sticking/slipping during turns.
Will be diving into it tomorrow at some point to see whats going on...
Any input/advice/ideas much appreciated.

I had this issue last year and found out that it was the axle bearing behind the driver side rear wheel. Its possible that the one of the bearings are broken and could be bouncing around the axle during rotation. Try these diagnostics......
Option 1, Coast with the Windows down to check and see whether if the noise is coming from under the car or from the rear tire
Option 2, secure front tires with blocks or anything to prevent it from rolling forward, lift or jack the rear of car, with both tires in the air, put the car in neutral, go and manually rotate the tires with your hands and locate this noise. And while your at it, check for fluid leaks by removing the center caps and rubbing your finger inside the wheel.
Hopefully u get blessed like me and its just a bearing. Hope this helps!!!!!

Rule out U-joint 1st.

My e-brakes shoe springs broke and were dancing around! Nasty noises and random banging
Broken end link bolt is my first guess.
They can appear intact when visually inspecting them but they break up top over the frame mount.

:dunno: Or maybe it's the Watts link stud that's broken.

I must add that it only happens during turning, forward and reverse. No indication of bad bearing.
Rule out U-joint 1st.
U-joints are fine.

E-brake springs are fine.

End links are fine.

Just did my watts link a few months ago and that's all intact as well.
Time to break get inside the pumpkin and see what's going on inside there!
Thanks for the suggestions guys, will update as I go.

I have not taken my car to a mechanic in years...I refuse. Zack did my engine swap a couple years back. Since then..I do all my own work. I'm no fool sir...My suspicions were correct. The spiders are destroyed.

Yuck...
They didn't look too great 2 years ago when I did the axles.
500 hard launches and 100 burnouts later the results are no surprise.
Anyone have any extras? :D

Where are all the metal chips and how much damage did they do to the rest of the running gear??

Most of the metal seems to have made its way to the bottom of the carrier housing. Vacuumed out a number of large chunks and a lot of shavings. Going to blast the inside right now with brake cleaner and give it a thorough inspection.

time for a rear end upgrade. Cant go wrong with the 31 Ford Spline Axle's and Ford Racing M-4210-C Kit. Hey by the way VOSTOK, was that you I driving next to about a year ago in Bollingbrook, i want to say in October i was driving right next to you and we had a little talk before the light turned green you said what does this mean were gona race? Anyways take it to Dean's Performance if you have a hard time trusting local mechanics. They're the best nothing but positive energy there.

Side gears are looking a little worn but they will suffice for now. Everything else outside of that is in decent shape. As I mentioned in the OP I only drove a couple miles on it when the popping started. Good thing I wasent far from home...

So, with the clarity of hindsight, you should have rebuilt the whole axle (rebuilt or replaced the carrier also) instead of just swapping axles. Live and learn. And people on this forum wonder why I don't agree with just replacing the axles at 100K+ miles . . .
So now you're going to just replace the spiders or put a new carrier in? And bearings, seals, maybe even a ring and pinion? How soon do you want to dive into the axle again? :D

I would do everything if the funding was not an issue. Like I said, being my DD and recently becoming unemployed...I just have to make it work right now. I'm a firm believer in "doing it right the first time" but there always seems to be stipulations and circumstances out of my control.

Went to the u-pull-it today. 2nd panther I came across was a Grand Marquis. Whoever picked the car over before me already had the differential cover off, and the slide pin out that releases the spider gears. All I had to do was spin the drive shaft a couple times and these gems fell right out. They are in excellent condition.
80k miles on them but the condition of the car gave me the impression that it was very lightly used (older folk most likely).
Everything is all put back together and she's running great. Hope this fix will last me until I can work in some upgrades.

I think it's suppose to be 75-90 gear oil.

There's been a lot of debate around this. Ford revised the recommended weight to 75W-140 after the "soft axle" issue was resolved. I've also heard from many members on here that any brand outside of Royal Purple does not have an adequate amount of friction modifier put into the blend.

Mobile 1 = 18.99qt
Royal Purple = 21.99qt
Went for the good stuff.

75W 140 is the correct weight.
Synthetic lube does not need friction modifier added.

I just replaced my axles yesterday, evidently I used the wrong weight. Anyway i used Mobil 1 LS 75-90 but on the way home last night I had clutch chatter on slow left or right hand turns. Today I went to a parking lot and did about 10 figure 8s and it's all good now.
The Mobil 1 LS (Limited Slip) has the modifier in it. I just had to get it working by doing figure 8s.
I got the axles from Oreillys for 140 each with bearings and studs.

Mobil 1 is crap. Within a hundred miles it chattered in mine and I had to add FM.
Last time around I bought five quarts of Lucas in sale from Summit for under $9 each shipped and added FM for giggles.

A Ford 8.8 limited slip differential is all the same. Only differentiation to make note of is whether it's 28 spline or 31 spline. I don't believe it makes any difference to the spider gears though as to how many splines are on the axle...

Plus width, mounting points, brakes, axle flanges and pinion flanges, otherwise all the same.
And yes, spider gears are the same, side gears are different.
